black number plates?

i saw a black smart roadster the other day. with black number plates and white lettering.
is this even legal?

Nope, unless the car was meant to have them from new...

fancyplates.com sells them. i guess theyr not meant to sell them to newer cars then.

They'd sell them for show use only, as is any plate that isnt the standard font/ size/ spacing that was fitted to the car from new and approved by the dvla.
