Bleeding Brakes Questions.

Sorry if this has been posted before, i'm looking into getting braided brake hoses http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?t=321173

This would involve removing my standard rubber ones obviously and bleed the brakes after fitting of the braided ones.

I have never bled brakes before :( and don't fancy getting a garage to fit them for what sounds like an easy job :S

I take its just a case of keeping the brake fluid reservoir topped up and getting someone to pump the brake pedal when i go round each caliper(starting with one furthest away from reservoir) and open the bleed nipples one at a time till the fluid comes out with no air bubbles ?

And can i use a normal spanner ?

Or does it have to be a brake spanner ?

Any useful and timesaving tips (if any) would be appreciated ;)http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?t=321173

if it's non abs then it's straight forward as you say, normal spanner is fine, just be careful (WD40 first) you don't shear the nipples off. if it abs which i suspect, it's a bit different i believe to bleed, but i've never done one.

Re: Bleeding Brakes Questions and do i have to do it different way if i have ABS ?

My car has ABS as its a 172 FF, what issues/problems would that cause me :S

Does anyone know what way i'm meant to bleed my car if it has ABS ?

Cheers bud, so its a case of.

Ignition off.

Go round each caliper opening the bleed nipples on each in the order stated in that link till all the brake fluid comes out with no air (with someone pumping brake pedal) making sure not to run reservoir dry.

Whats the bit bout the pedal travel about ?

Wouldn't the pedal travel be the same all the time?

Or would it be different if there was still air in system ?

pedal will be spongy if air in system. pedal will go down alot if something is wrong eg leak, hoses expanding etc.
pedal travel can change, on the track day i last did, the pedal was on the floor cos i'd overheated the brakes. pedal should be firm and up the top with engine off

Its a tight fit screwing the new lines on and I totally fucked it up, had to get the RAC to tow it to a garage. Can't remember how much it cost me, but I'd get a quote from your garage to see if its really worth the risk of doin it yourself

How did you manage to screw it up matey? shouldnt be too complex

The ends of the brake pipes on my car just seemed a smidgen to big for the new lines to go over, so when forcing it they ended up at a bit of an angle and started cross threading. it was gettin harder and harder to do them up until they wouldnt budge anymore and it wasnt a tight seal :(

you dont just open the nipple and pump

pedal down nipple open let fluid out close
pedal up
pedal down then close
up
etc etc

if you do it wrong and open it with the pedal up you just end up sucking air back in to the system
