Blown up???

  CLIO 172
Hi all, not a good start for me and Clio's. Bought an 02 plate 172 with 80,000 on clock. Car seems nice and clean in and out. Only had the car on weekend and after coming from a Saxo VTR was expecting a big differance in performance which wasn't really there. Car revs to limiter but no real pull. Bought the car off a mechanic who said he'd changed belts but not dephaser. Slowing down earlier at about 4000 rpm it started to knock and rattle and cut out when clutch was pressed. Limped home, only a couple of hundred yards. Engine will start but not idle and no lights on dash. Does this match the dephaser or is it terminal ??? Looked up about dephasers and most don't mention idling probs and noise goes after 2000 rpm which mine does'nt. Not a mechanic but would swear noise is coming from cams. Any pointers much appreciated :(

Oh, not good. Can you not go back to your mechanic friend and speak to him? How long had he had the car for?

Doesn't sound like a dephaser i don't think. More often than not they just give you a nasty rattle.

Do you know when the belts were done and if the mechanic used the correct timing tools. The belts are pretty easy to do with the correct tools but without them it can lead to the timing being our a fair bit. This might give you the lack of performance and result in a failure. I am not expert but based on what you have said that might be it.

When you say knock, how bad or loud is it?

Maybe the crank sensor has gone causing it not to ideal etc, that would be a simpler fix.

Best bet is to get it to one of the specialists on hear, I wouldn't bother with a generic garage as they will just cost more in the long run while they try and diagnose it, where as a specialist will prob know what it is straight away and fix the issue for a load less.

Good luck getting it sorted.
