Have people seen a huge difference in watching br films - i have 3 br movies at present and i dont whether its just me but i cant tell much difference.

im watching my blu ray throuh a ps3 and a hdmi lead and a 37" toshiba (1080p)

  Tesla MP3 2021
I can tell the difference when watching Sky HD and when I have played films back through my Pc on my HD LCD. Not watched a TRUE HD/Blue Ray movie as of yet though!

Depends on the movie tbh.

I've got about 25 Blu Rays / HD-DVDs and some are better than others. Die Hard 4 (Blu Ray) and Transformers (HD-DVD) are the best visually I've seen on each format, with the exception of Planet Earth on Blu Ray which is glorious! :)

Blu-ray for me is fantastic, can tell the difference easily.

Can notice the difference between;

SD source
SKY HD 1080i
Blu-ray 1080p 24 fps

Planet Earth on blu-ray is absolutely superb!

i'm surprised people are saying planet earth looks amazing as i was very disappointed with my bluray copy, its got a lot of grain and the pic isn't that great considering it was all shot in HD, probably the biggest let down of my high def movies and i have about 40 between the 2 formats.

I watched 300 and Apocalypto and they looked fantastic. I'm only 720p or 1080i too. Much better than an upscaled DVD!

Depends what i watch, i try to buy blu-rays that have good action scenes, then you tend to notice the diference more, i found Casino Royale and Pearl Harbour amazing, while Hostel 2 and Gone in 60 seconds didnt seem much different.

Thats viewed using the PS3 and a 40"samsung at 1080p or 1080i, i dunno the difference

it all depends what movies they are, many were filmed in SD and as such when you buy a blueray version of a SD film its only upscaled. Robery if you ask me.

However the films filmed in genuine HD, and then shown in HD look stunning.

not true, most films are filmed using real film and this is actually a higher quality than HD (effective higher resolution), it all depends on the transfer, the codecs used and the quality of the original they are taking from, i have some films that are over 20yrs old and look better on BD than many new films even though they were filmed in HD, film is just still better quality, when making films there isn't really such a thing as SD.

for me it's very obvious.

i swapped between blu-ray casino royale and DVD version and the difference is BIG. As said before some movies are better than others, the terminator 2 HD clip i've seen looks identical to the dvd imo. Best to buy only the new releases i think.

However, if you watch them in HD regularly, you get accustomed and regular telly looks f**king sh!t.

Check the settings on your PS3, make sure the following are turned on from the [Display Menu]

-Superwhite.
-RBG Full range.

Then retry.

The best example of BR or HD in general was seeing King Kong on BluRay on a 40" Harmon Kardon TV, it did look absolutely stunning.

I imagine HD DVD looks just as good though?

king kong is a HD-DVD disc........................

the disc media has nothing to do with the quality of the film, its all down to the codec they use and in the beginning HD-DVD was using the better codec but then BD followed suit and they mostly use the same now so quality is the same.

The main differences are the size of the media and the special features.

The larger size of BD enables them to have more sound tracks say for multiple languages in europe and have a lot more HD extras etc.

Because all HD-DVD drives were able to connect to the internet they have web enabled features etc. whereas bluray drives tend not to although some later discs have them i believe. The main thing with BD was BDJ (java) which was needed to have all the fancy extras that HD-DVD had from the beginning and because it wasn't finalised the players were released and weren't compatible with the format so a lot of early adopters had drives that won't play a lot of future discs properly. I don't even think the format has even been ratified yet although players support the features, a good example of this is the PS3 which was simply upgraded via a firmware update.

Im still yet to watch something in true HD..

I downloaded Bourne but after waiting aaaaaaaaaages for it, it wouldnt play on my 360! :(

Ive got loads of live points so im waiting for something good to be released.

^BD discs use 40mb/s of video data, HD-DVD only uses 36mb/s too.
if i am being honest i think a lot more of my hd-dvd's look better than my BD's although then i watch something like Meet the robinsons and i feel like i am in the film its so 3d like.

heroes on HD-DVD is sensational!

i always buy films on BD if its available on both though, even though the hd-dvd is normally better with lossless sound and more extras purely so i don't have to listen to that stupid tornado fire up just to watch it when i can watch it in the ps3 with no background noise.

if they ever produce this decent 360 with built in hd-dvd and wireless and a decent size hdd then as long as its silence i will make the upgrade.

All very subjective, and I think that's the problem. There's so little between the formats it basically comes down to profitability for the studios over which to side with.

I think it varies a lot between media aswell, some films such as Transformers are obviously built with home HD cinema in mind, where as the smaller releases or remastered stuff is a marginal but not breathtaking improvement over DVD.

Good that things are taking shape anyway, basically everybody is losing out at the moment.

transformers in hd was worth the cost of the hd-dvd addon alone IMO, perfect transfer!

I find there's a huge difference, HD-DVD and Blu-Ray make DVD look like VHS. This is on 3 year old equipment as well.

^BD discs use 40mb/s of video data, HD-DVD only uses 36mb/s too.

I'm not sure what either format's maximum bit rate is, but typically HD encodes are around 20mbps - 25mbps on both formats. You will in fact find that the same film on Blu-Ray and HD-DVD is sometimes identical, they are made from the same AV streams. An example would be 300, both the HD-DVD and Blu-Ray versions were made from the same VC1 encode so they are identical. If you know what you are doing, you can actually convert an HD-DVD to Blu-Ray and vice versa without quality loss.

Was T2 the Blu-Ray release? It was poor IMO, even the 2003 Microsoft WMV-HD version was better, and that was 1/3 of the size! The HD-DVD version is a made from a much better master and looks (and sounds) better than either.
