Blueray winning the HD race?

Noticed blockbusters rent Blueray but not HD DVD and SKY are releasing a Blueray HD box?

whats that all about?

Blueray is selling at a rate of 2:1 right now, so yes it appears to be taking the lead...quite an achievement given the relative expense of BD players over HD-DVD, and the poor sales (so far) of the PS3.

Given the pathetic volume of sales you can't really call it "winning".

I'd say the only winning bet at the moment would be an each-way one. A player that can play both HD-DVD and BluRay.

on april the 25th aparantly there was only 2000 sales between them

It looks like at least so far, Blu-ray is dominating the HD format race.

Blu-ray discs have outsold HD DVD discs during the first quarter of 2007 by a 70-30 margin, according to market research from Home Media Magazine.

The sales figures indicate that 70% of high-definition format discs bought in the first quarter, 70% of them were Blu-ray, while 30% were HD DVD.

Blue-ray took its lead in February and kept growing to a point where nearly three out of every four HD discs purchased in March were Blu-ray.

The sales figures show that consumers purchased almost 1.2 million HD discs during the first quarter of 2007. The numbers show that 832,530 were Blu-ray and 359,300 were HD DVD.

Home Media Magazine also shows that eight of the top 10 top selling HD titles in the first quarter were on the Blu-ray format. The top selling HD title was the James Bond film "Casino Royale." In second place was the Oscar-winning "The Departed." Both sold more on the Blu-ray format.

Since the HD disc format was first introduced in 2006, 2.14 million of the HD discs have been sold. HD DVD was launched in April 2006, Blu-ray was introduced two months later. Blu-ray was the first format to hit the one million mark, with 1.2 million sold to this point, compared to 937,500 for HD DVD.

Industry observers aren't surprised by Blu-ray's lead because the format has the support of five of the top six movie studios. HD DVD is only supported by three of them. Those that support the HD DVD format claim that discs for the format are cheaper and easier to produce.

The numbers for the amount of HD discs sold to this point is actually disappointing. The numbers may seem high but those in the industry say the adoption rate for HD discs is very low, and that might be because consumers don't know yet which format may emerge as dominant. It is similar to the VHS vs. Beta Wars in the 1980s.

It should also be noted that HD DVD may now start to gain on Blu-ray. Wal-Mart has recently purchased two million HD DVD players and intends to offer them for less than $300. They are expected to go on sale in late 2007 or early 2008 and will be manufactured by Chinese Great Wall Corporation.

This would be much cheaper than any HD players currently available on the market.

Rubbish, they're independant figures from retail sales, not freebies (i.e Bond). Doesn't matter which journal you read, BD is currently leading the race, end of.

the people collecting the sales data arnt always indipendent !

the best figures to look at are the attatch rates how many sales per player
at the moment the attatch rate for bluray is about .5-1 but hd-dvd is about 5-1

Actually the figures are from the distributors not the actual outlets (as with all sales figures) and do actually include the 450,000 copies of Casino Royale Sony Distribution ordered from Columbia for the freebie give-away. Mad, as they are technically owned by the same company. Rumours are Sony only did this to get the edge on the BD/HD market, which wouldnt surprise me.

If you discount that lot there's absolutely nothing in it.

I dont think anyone will win in the end, one of them is not going to turn into an obsolete format imo.

There is advantages/disadvantages to both formats.

There is multi-format drives on the market, so i dont/wont care either way.

Universal are the only HD-DVD exlcusive studio and they are supposedly in talks to go to Blu-Ray, so basically every film wud then be available on blu-ray

Hopefully, Fox, Disney and co are in talks with the HD-DVD camp as well lol given how often they're delaying there HD content.....

I don't think the p**n industry will have any bearing on this war, times have changed and people use their PC's for their thrills. It's the consumers who have the power in this war.
