BP ULTIMATE

My local BP has just started using Ultimate, anyone got any reports on if its any good, I tried OPTIMAX once or twice, and dint notice any power or mpg difference so its the cheap stuff for me!!!!

there were a few topics on this a while ago,

personally i never noticed any differences between that and normal unleaded,

allit is is super plus any way, 97 ron

My car on BP Ultimate is not as quick as my car on Super Plus / Optimax, even though theyre saying its 97 Ron as well!!! I think I notice the difference in the top rev range of the gears the most.

On normal unleaded my car feels like its flat spotting.

Definately go for Optimax if theres a shell near you, if not you wont notice the difference between that and Super Plus IMO.

I once had a small amount of Optimax in my tank. Refilled to the brim with Optimax, pulled away and thought wow, this feels better!. But how could it? Im carrying more weight and using the same petrol as before. It cant be performing better.

Anyway, whether its perception or reality, my car feel perkier after BP Ultimate. Probably a load of cobblers, but perceptions a cunning thing. As I learnt.

If you bought a really good camera, would you use Tesco Value film in it?

Noticable performance gains or not, the expensive stuff will just be better for your 172 (budget allowing of course).

You just want to use the fuel with the highest octane rate. Burns better and is better for the engine, in Japan they use like 100 ronand here the best we have is 98ron so best to use that if ya can.

Its all in the mind if you ask me, i cant see how you can tell with modern day cars when using 95ron or 97?! Ive never really noticed any performance increase between the 2 fuel types.

a good point, but im only planning to keep the beast for a bout 2 years, then maybe trade up for a v6, budgets not really an issue, its just that normal human instinct of wanting to get the cheapest option - (any damage to the engine will be someones elses problem!) and Im sure my engine using 95 ron will be in better nick than some of the thrashed engines on here that use optimax!!!

I started using Optimax a few months ago, and it might just be me, but the car did seem slightly nippier, but seeing as how my car is only a 1.2 i guess it is my overactive imagination.

Last time I filled up I used BP Ultimate, it cost more (83.something)and didnt do what it promised on the leaflet (said a 1.6 would feel like a 1.8 and a 1.8 would fell lick a 2.0 etc...!)

Filled up with Optimax today, much, much better IMO :)

its recommended for the 172 that you use Super unleaded.........so use it !

would you put cheapo sh*t oil in it ?...........wouldnt think so.........so why buy a performance car and use petrol which will give lower performance

little phrase we use at work.........we can advise our customers til were blue in the face, but you cant protect people from there own stupidity..............main time we use that is when people with Ford Zetecs come in and try and buy the cheap 20W-50........claiming "oils oil !"...........well would you mind while i watch you f**k your engine up while putting that in, i will point and i will laugh, and no you cant have a refund......

Dont bother. Stick with 98ron optimax.
unless of course the feckers at shell have closed down all the optimax garages within about a fifty mile radius and your only choice is between ultimate and tesco

Really thought they recommended 98 RON, whihc if im not mistaken is Optimax, thought Super unleaded was 97 RON? Or do i have the wrong end of the stick again? *sigh*

used BP ultimate after optimax on my import and it makes a noticable dif to the way the car runs, one word smooth, but then mine has been originaly mapped for over 100 ron anyway.

i have filled up with optimax the last couple of times and the difference is great plus im getting better mpg!!!

my local BP doesnt have ultimate - has 97Ron but also has pumps that have 98Ron on em?!

Been sticking 98 in obviously but its strange there both labelled up as super and are the same price?!

Not noticed any difference though but seen as its there.....

bp ultimate isok but optimax is noticeable diff runs smother picks up better.

for the car is like choice between shandy or beer? lol or vodka

Well, i would doubt very much whether you would notice an improvement in response in a 172, and even less so in less powerful cars. I think its all psychological. On the inside of the fuel cap, it is recommended you use at least 97 (or is it 98) RON petrol.

Optimax is the best high octane fuel generally available (lol I work for Shell Exploration, not the Oil Products division hehehe), and i thought i read somewhere that BP Ultimate was supposed to be 100 RON???

Think its about 80p per litre at the Shell garage on the Oxford Road (Nr. Tilehurst) - its certainly no more expensive than BP Ultimate (if my memory serves me correctly!)

Probably differs from engine to engine, but my car is with out doubt, quicker on super plus / optimax than on normal unleaded or even BP Ultimate - which doesnt do what its says on the tin, IMO.

the JET garage nearest to us does normal unleaded at 72.9 per litre so as I do a lot of miles, and I didnt notice a bit of difference between optimax and the cheap stuff Im struggling to justify to myself the price difference!!

thats more or less my situation. Nearest shells in the sticks and opens for about an hour a day. Nearest BPs in the next town. I really wish theyd open a shell closer to me.
