  MK3 GTI golf 16v
should i paint my brake calipers or buy some covers to go over them ? i dont have the money to buy new ones :( what you think ?

yeah my mate said about covers you can buy to go over the original calipers, but they dont fit on wheels with rims under 16inch apparently, so painting it is. there a certain type of paint for that you think ? or just metal paint will do

Not those daft Brembo lookalike caliper covers?! Seen them on Ebay, just don't do it!

Painting them is fine - just make sure you clean the calipers up first - I always use a wire brush and brake caliper cleaner spray.

At the minimum you might get away with high temp engine paint, although you can buy specific caliper paint which I've found is better.

go with painting then i think, alright ill look into some proper paint for it, cheers guys

Them covers sound dodgy lol

paint them, caliper paint is best will last better than vht paint. and as said make sure they are really clean before.

Buy the paint first and use what the paint manufacturer recommends.

I'm sitting here with the hammerite can in front of me.

So follow my original suggestion.

- wire brush
- wash them with water
- brake cleaner / carb cleaner / paint thinner etc etc. Any solvent cleaner that doesn't leave a residue.
- spray with hammerite.

That's very sneaky of them. Everything leaves a residue, although hammerite seems to stick to anything.

It doesn't specifically say something that doesn't leave a residue... But there's solvent cleaners that leave very little residue.

It actually says 'remove grease with hammerite brush cleaner'.

I think when I did mine, I used silver engine paint. It stuck to my hands and forearms very well and I hadn't degreased them lol.
I think I used one of those lethal wire brushes that you put in a drill and thinners and it's still there.

Fair doos!

I think basically it doesn't matter, as long as your callipers aren't completely caked in s**t. You'll be fine. May as well do a thorough job of cleaning them though. Can't do any harm.
