Brake setup done! Pics!!

  172
Hey up, after lots of grief from dodgy bolts, locking wheel nuts and bad weather i've finally finished the setup! Steps below;

b8rl1.jpg

Rnault 21 Turbo calipers as they started out, had them free'd up at a garage, and the coated in hammerite.

Brackets, made to detailed plans by Simons mate.

Gf, having a go at one of the wheel nuts ha ha.

Cheap tool casualty :(

Ultra gay torx head bolt didn't want to come off so it was faced with a chisel and hammer.

Mole grips on the brake line as it didn't want to come off!

Old Vs New disk retaining bolt!!

Nasty old brake setup (this setup realy was crap).

Getting the arsey caliper bolts off the old setup, that were torqued too tight.

Shiney new 285mm x 21mm, vented disc.

img27921hz.jpg

Copper slip applied so the disc wont sieze to the hub again.

Washers placed so the bolt didn't go through the caliper and touch the disc. Also this type of bolt was extremely hard to find, and could only get it in this length, hence the washers. Also one one side I needed a washer between the bracket and hub but not on the other which leads me to believe it's a bracket problem.

Loctite applied to all bolts.

Torqing all the bolts to the right ft/lb.

Pads in place :)

img28028hv.jpg

Temorary seal made with old boots and a bendy washer, to protect the slider pin.

Before

After! Excuse the poor wheel condition!

Again the wheels are messed up but will be refurbed shortly.

So was this worth all the grief? Hell yeah. The braking compared to the old setup is immense. They bite a bit hard and locked today in the wet which was scary because I wasn't used to it. Went on to some dry road earlier and the stopping power is superb!! Deffinately worth all the effort!

tbh mate , looks like a half arsed attempt at painting your calipers imo . If your not gonna take your time and do a good job , why bother at all ??

  Shhh
Assume you were pressed for time, so good job.

Maybe when you get time, repaint the callipers with maybe 3 or 4 coats and hey presto..

Good job..:)

I was doing all this between my Uni work, calipers are cast, it's only surface rust, they will not break or rust through if I don't paint them! The paint was cosmetic, it was hammerite direct to rust, 2 coats - all that was recommended. Why is everyone so bothered about it? It's about braking not how pretty the gay calipers look.

Why arn't the wheels worth refurbing? You can't get them anymore! Already had a quote of £100 for all 4 to get like new. They were like this pretty much when I got em.

The surface area of those pads covers all the disc, I strongly doubt the TXi calipers were much bigger than the Turbo.. It's just the way it is with that setup.

Edit: This lot cost me £80 from start to finish, hardly going to be brilliant in every way is it? The difference from the old setup is incredible! That's what I was after, I bet some of you pay that for a disc and pad change! :p
