Having sky fitted tommorow and have been told that i need to have the phone plug from the box plugged into the wall at all times for the first 12 months...Ive been thinking with broadband your meant to have a filter on every phone socket where u attach a phoneplug...Does this mean i need to have my sky box plugged into a filter or dont it matter:S

Thanks

You need a filter for every socket with uses any device, so telephone/fax/sky box/hamster whatever it is you plug in to a socket it needs to be filtered.

All it does is stop devices interefering with data/voice channels. For £5 filter its worth doing.

Apparently.
You'll get a letter if it isn't.. it calls home at odd times.

Its supposed to be plugged in in case they send out any sotfware upgrades , or so they say .

Real reason is for pay per view channels .

If its not plugged in you won't get a bill for the pay per view. Only downside is when you do eventually plug it in you'll get a massive bill ,lol ;)

There was a rumour goin' round ages ago if you wire a telephone socket to a 9v battery and plug that in all the pay per view channels are free .
Total b*llocks , ask one of the lads at work , pmsl !
When he eventually plugged is phone line back in he got a huge bill for all the pay per views he'd been watchin .

had sky now for well over a year, it's plugged directly into a phone socket.. no filter for me.

Arent these filters just for things like Telephones & possible faxes, to stop any possible interferance?
When i first had BB, someone called me on my house phone before fitting the filter & it sounded fine?
I just put a filter on the socket with my telephone & all is well..

Sorry but that's not true.

Updates are done via the dish, not the phone line.
Pay per view is done via the dish, not the phone line.
As far as I know you only plug the box into the phone line for marketing reasons.

As far as the sky contract goes you get the box free by agreeing to keep it plugged into the line for 12 months, after this period you are free to unplug it - it makes no difference to your service.

I don't know if they have anyway of checking that it's not plugged in but the sky engineer who connected us recently implied that they didn't.

You can pay sky a one off fee to break the contract as it where which means you don't need to have it plugged into the phone line.

^^^^^^^^^^

Unplugging the telephone cable and using a 9v battery did used to give you free pay per view , we all tried it at work but one bloke got carried away ,lol .

Clocked up 90 quids worth of films where as evetybody else being a bit dubious only watched 1 film each .

When we all plugged the telephone line back in a couple of months later we all got billed , even the guy who clocked up 90 quids worth , pmsl .

Explain that then ??

Heres an old link from 2002 .

http://www.e-repair.co.uk/story146.htm

More confirmation here that you need the phone line for pay per view billing .

MrBillyUK !

Oh yes .. this bit on the page looks VERY familiar...

"In theory you will be in breach of contract (if you've signed the BIB contract) but in practice they can't object to your disconnecting on the grounds of safety. You'll find that the Digibox phone connection might also affect your computer modem speed adversely."

Mine kicks me off broadband ... Hence why I dont connect my sky box, unplugged it 2 days after it was installed and after 17 unexplained "broadband disconnected - Modem cannot find dial tone" errors on my PC..

Fecking sky and their ever so sly "spyware"

Mine upsets my modem as well so I take the Sky plug out the filters when on the Internet and put them back when not. Is this going to spell trouble with Sky? Had no contact about it so far.

You'll be alright mate . Its only used for marketing purposes , checkin' on pay per view stuff etc ....

MrBillyUK !

lol sky does ppv via the modem but if it is disconnected it will let you watch movies for free untill you hit your credit limit then when you plug it in it will charge you everything back dated. but to prevent people doing it the box will only let you watch a certain ammount offline before stopping you
