Buying a 16v

Buying a damaged 16v

Hi everyone, sorry to make my first post a question...and one thats probably asked all the time, anyways....my mate is a bit strapped for cash at the moment and is desperate to sell his valver, but when it went in for its MOT it failed on mulitple things, they've now been sorted but when he finally thought everything was back on the straight and narrow....the head gasket has gone.

So now he's fed up of throwing money at it only for it to break again, so he wants shut....and i want in :D So...to get back to my question, how much would it be worth? from memory he paid about 700 about three/ four months ago for it and it isn't in the best of nick, the sunroof seal has gone and was replaced with bathroom sealent  it needs the rear brake caliper fixing as its sticking and from memory, theres one or two scratchs around the car, no significant rust though. So if i were to put an offer in, what would everyone recommend? Sorry to be a pain with such a stupid question but i've never dealt with renaults before, usually im a vw lad. I've looked through one or two of the classifieds on here aswell as on PH and the trader, just wonder what sort of % should i knock him down by??

Any help is much appreciated, and if this is the wrong section, sorry!

Cheers in advance,

J :D

My advice would be don't buy it.

It already has problems and to have the head gasket replaced is a book time of 12 hours, so you can imagine how much a garage would charge for that!

They're nice cars but savagely unreliable and you'd be better saving your money and buying something else. Unless you buy a complete minter you'll constantly be forking out cash for things breaking.

Only reason i was contemplating it was because i know he's skint and wants rid of it asap, so if i can get it cheap enough i wouldn't be bothered about off setting the price of replacing the head gasket on it, the car was going to be stripped out and used as a track-day car anyways so can always re-coup some more money selling bits off it!

put it this way mate,

i bought a valver...and a clean one at that. only a small bit of rust on the rear arches...only just started bubbling though. no scratches (no deep ones and the surace ones polished out :)) had team dynamic monzas, piperscross I.K, mom millenium wheel...and apart from that it was standard....449 blue.

mechanically mint, only needed a new bushing on the steering colum and a new brake bias valve and i payed £650.....after the work was caried out i had a mint valver for like £750....
