I had a D40, went to a 450D, then back to a D60.
But currently really enjoying using the misses Olympus E-420!
Why from a 450D back to a D60?
I feel comfy with both!!!!
Do you think the 450D is worth the extra money??
This is seriously doing my head in!

Dont rule out the Sony Alpha series, they make some very good cameras with awesome lenses
Trying to be unbiased, but the Nikon kit lenses are generally regarded as being better than the Canon equivalents in magazine reviews etc, so if you are thinking of sticking to a fairly basic set up it's worth considering. Obviously if you plan to upgrade to new lens then it's a non issue anyhow.
On the plus side for the Canon, it does have a much wider range of lens available, and if you are considering shopping around for second-hand lens you will have far more joy picking up Canon gear that is fully compatible with the body.
I personally don't think the body is a big issue if like you say you don't have any preference in terms of handling, that's usually the only thing to consider as there really is very little in it. Surprised you were not bothered either way though, they feel quite different and are different to operate in terms of button layout etc.
I don't get why you want us to make the decision for you.
Whichever you buy will be more than good enough for your needs.
