Cable throttle..

Car  BMW 330cd
I have a ph2 172 standard and I'm getting fed up of my fly-by wire throttle and it's slow throttle response. And no it's not my throttle, all fly-by wire throttles are s**t! My question is how hard would it be to convert it to a cable throttle and do any specialists do it that anyone knows of? :)

As the ph2 doesn't run an idle control valve, I'd guess using a cable throttle tb on a ph2 you would have to sit the butterfly slightly open to regain some sort of idle - unsure that will give a very good idle - then again, most ph1's don't exactly have the best idles anyway lol

Or as fred says you would have to use a ph1 ecu and wiring loom wo you have the wiring for the icv

This is bad news, i bet this could of been a popular mod if it was cheap and not so labor intensive. I'm going to have to forget that idea then..Maybe i'll get myself a ph1 quicker and cheaper tax! The throttle and interior build quality are the only things that let the clio sport down..

Really don't rate the throttle feel on my ph1 anyway, seems very unprogressive in travel and quite stiff too. Not to mention the throttle bodies suffer from sticking throttles due to butterfly valve wearing prematurely!

Think we need an all round fix for the rs TB, An improvement and direct replacement would be the perfect solution..

I was told fitting a standalone ecu means you could adjust it to make the throttle feel more responsive any way.

Not sure how its done though.

You are limited by the mechanical limits of the motor in the body even if you go aftermarket.

If you want it direct then a cable throttle is the only option really on a clio, lot of work for what IMHO is a pretty minor "fault" though.

Coming from the ph1 to the 182 it felt horrible at first but I have got used to it now and it doesn't feel too bad.

I have a feeling my timing might be out anyway as the noticeable difference was the lack of low down responsiveness so hopefully when I get the belts done I notice an improvement.

I think a lot of people blame the FBW when its just their engine/map at fault, I have no complaints at all on our RS2 car which uses the standard FBW throttle, and everyone else who has driven it seems to love it too.

Yep theres definitely a lack of low down pull as certain times in 3rd gear off roundabouts it feels gutless compared to the ph1.

Although if I keep the revs high and really ring it out then its just as fast, so belts ktec ik and a map and I'm hoping it will feel better low down like the ph1.

Well the person that mapped it has a good reputation on here so whether that is the sole cause I don't know but I'm sure ill find out given a bit of time and ££.

Yep fingers crossed will be hugely chuffed if it feels noticeably more poky after belts.

They were done in a renault dealership so who knows, they would of used the correct tools I would of thought.

If the timing is out would it effect the map when they get done and timed up?

I guessed that may be the case lol bloody ballache this car, Its getting over £1k spend on her next week :(.

Sadly despite being cheap cars, when you start needing specialist time like cam timing and mapping, its expensive.
