cam belt question

  Clio 172
Hi guys, my rocker cover on my 172 developed a leak the other day and iv been told that when the rocker seal is re-done you are ment to change the cam belt at the same time no matter how new it is, this chap is a friend of a friend and says he can do it for me and he doesnt need to use a cam locking tool? He says it will cost about £150 to do the belt, tensioners and re-seal the rocker cover. Just seeing if anyone can confirm this is all true and about the right price or not?
Many thanks, Dave.

if that's the full cambelt kit the price for the parts is around that IIRC, so he must be doing it for nothing. Oh and you MUST us the locking tools mate.

With friends like him you don't need enemies mate... does he warrant that work to at that price? :)

Ask him if I can come to watch him do it at his workshop? I just want to be there to watch his face the first time he cranks it with the new belt on

I thought this might be the case, aparently this chap owns his own garage and he said he would come 2 me and do it, im presuming he ment it was £150 labour and i pay for the parts seperatly. Im quite interested 2 see how he would manage to do the cambelt without the locking tool but dont think i want to risk my engine to find out how! Think i might try and find someone else with the tools to do the job.
Thanks for the advice guys.

it is possible to do it without locking the cams and crank, but risky, and i would imagine a smaller garage would only be 150-200 labour anyway, so defo not worth it mate

NO

No, it's not. You can't remove the rocker cover without removing the cam pulleys FFS. and ALL the pulleys are non-keyed.

I asked my new mechanic (Ex-renault) if he'd do my cambelt. (172)

He said no because he didn't have the locking tools. That to me speaks volumes. I'd rather trust someone like that than someone that just thinks ''fcuk it, i'll give it a bash''.

I'm not sure how the clio cams are set up but my brother did the cam belt on his old mx5 with 3 vice grips, one on each cam and the third to hold the two grips in place ;) worked a treat!

Tell him to have a go at doing a clio cambelt with grips, see how far he gets ;)

My mate did mine, ex renault but works at nationwide now. He said it was impossible to do it without the PROPER RENAULT tools. Cost me £400 quid all in, Genuine Renault Aux belt kit , and Unipart cambelt kit. If I were you I would try and find a a specialist on here that can do it... Have a look in the traders section!!
