renault wolverhampton mate 01902 251231 ask for steve mention cliosport.net member cheapest around

I decided to do my own because I heard that no one on earth other than a specialist can do one... Not even renault can..

So I did one and a week later did another on a local members 182..

The secret is to get the timing spot on before you put the car back together.. If it's out and you proceed to button up the job, your a grade one turd..

I actually felt like recording one of those YouTube videos of my horse shoe slotting in like a boss, but then I remembered that I don't care enough..

Yep, too much scaremongering about timing belt changes on here! It really isn't a complicated job with the right tools. That's the important bit - the right Renault tools. If you don't use the tools or buy cheap ones and the timing will be out.

I think the reason why people scaremonger is due to the following things:

  • The tools are not the cheapest, although one garage I almost went to claims the 1.6 Megane timing tools will do the job
  • A number of garages will just tippex things up and hope for the best ; I know that many garages near me would do just that, including my MOT man.
  • Garage seem to hate working on cars with tight spaces and bodge them accordingly ; My first Mondeo V6 would always come back with another issue from the garage due to simple carelessness, things like rubbing coolant hoses against the 'belt, crushed coolant hoses, PAS lines ripped, and in one case a Ford only Y-Pipe being destroyed during a cat fitment (that was from 2 different garages as well).
While there is nothing massively complicated about the job it seems that a number of mechanics are botch monkeys to be brutally honest. Christ, I've seen a Kangoo 1.5 DCi start tapping from a simple alternator swap (yup, it was the valves...).

OTOH maybe I have simply being quite unlucky;although the garages do seem to moan at me buying 'unusually engined' cars as above, with the Clio being in that list.

I will take my time and do plenty of research, I've built up many engines (I do it for a living) principal is the same on every engine, some like this engine have certain ways of timing the engine. I'm an engineer, and fully qualified mechanic, the reason I asked is because I wasn't sure what came in the cam belt kit as most kits differ. A part from the keyboard warrior above, thanks for the help guys, much appreciated.

Thanks gaz

The problem is time..

On a driveway it take a long time, even with 2 people.

I think that is the biggest issue for most garages which is probably where the problems arise. When you can make more cash changing a set of EPB brake pads in the rear of a Passat, or doing services etc. a cambelt that takes ages will be quite annoying especially when the customers themselves are quite tight fisted and come out with tales of how 'ma cuz culd du it for 250 smackers innit?".

I remember when dealing with LPG cars and the classic trade customers were very quick to moan about price, although I guess it is natural..

locking pin is different, other than that the rest is the same.

If you do not mind me asking, how is the pin different? Does it engage with the crank too loosely etc? From @car.crash 's pics (although it is always hard to tell) the pin looks remarkably similar to that used in the larger Zetec engines timing ; I am happy to giving the dimensions of my timing pin for the Zetec.

Of course, one would still need the tools for the upper end...

Everyone on cliosport knows only BTM can set cam timing correctly on a 172 !

If what happened on mine was true from a very well known respected specialist (the timing was ever so slightly out) there may be some truth in that!

TBH I was going to give my Clio a go; I have changed a few before modern and old. I am no Jedi at engine work but it seems to be a logical process on a Clio. But the price of the tools and the hassle (i.e time on a driveway with variable weather!) of changing it made me send it BTM's way!

the k4m pin screws in to the block and fwir (been a long time since i did one) the pin goes in and the crank is turned until it hits against the pin whereas on the f4r the pin goes in to a timing hole in the crank. daftly enough there is a balancing drilling right next to it!!

Are you taking the piss or being a dick? It's mechanic's not rocket science

Taking the piss ! Shame you never realised ! Same as my first post , many people can do belts on these cars but most people think only certain specialists on here can do the timing correctly ,( it is one of the laws of the forum ) I was also rerering to the thread in my first post not necessarily you f#cking it up !
Although in the many years of being a member on this forum I have seen a lot of people do just that,
good luck with it .

There's always been a lot of witchcraft surrounding cambelts on here , which isn't the case. Good luck with it , would be interested to see some pictures of the change if you get any.

Cheers mate, I have a project thread which I'm keeping track of progress and I did think about adding a few photos to prove it isn't impossible. Thanks again

I guess anything is witchcraft when you are surrounded by bodgers and people wanting a 'quick buck'.

Maybe I have been unlucky with local garages I have been to but then on the flipside I have bought cars very cheaply where alot of work has been done via garages and specialists, only for me to get them fixed from what seemed like stupid mistakes, and see friends pour away good money after bad at a 'simple' fault.

As said I am not a Jedi of engineering by a long shot but it never ceases to amaze of how people can get away with such ineptness in various trades.

This is why I'm doing it myself. I got a price for a garage to do my clutch but just scared me how cheap they could do it, I wanted to do it myself but just have little to no time. I spoke to my wife and agreed to help me out with time ect to get it done. I must admit I feel like i have spent hardly any time on it as I haven't really misses out on any family time but, I've probably been working on it for about 5 hours on and off. Glad I did it myself now as I now how particular I am and I know I'll get the job now and do it rite.

Totally, that said if you or anyone else wasn't going to do it, I'd only go to one of the main guys on here..

Time being the issue, I know they'll be fast and do it right.. I really wouldn't trust a normal garage to do it in good time as getting it spot on is interesting.

My local specialist reckons that 4/5 of every Clio that comes in has either advanced or retarded timing.

Unless i was doing them day in day out, i'd just take the c**t to a garage. £450/500 is not a great deal after you consider the dephaser and belt kit is around £270 anyway, not including renting or buying the timing tools.

Thing is it's no different in terms of principle to something like a zetec SE with the fact it has fully floating pulleys and relies on friction instead of a woodruff key

Providing you have all the tools not just the horseshoe and pin and the correct procedure and a little bit of know how most the work is in stripping the car to do the job.

Crack on mate. Even mechanics canny get it right!😂

But for the sake of how much it costs and the sheer hassle of it, i'd personally just get it done at a specialist. If it fails then your cars off the road for a few weeks, at least the works guaranteed at a garage.
