Cambelt Change

  Euro VTR - Black 182
Just a quick question hopefully about the cam belt change, the garage i've taken it too have said they need to take the engine out to change it. Is this common with these cars? This is a Clio 182. Kind Regards, Dan

As you've probably guessed by now, no the engine doesn't have to come out of the car. As that's such a fundamental error i'd consider taking it elsewhere.

As i've said i'm not paying for this it's being done this week before I buy the car, is there anything I should be worried about.

Yeah. The mongo getting it wrong and the timing being out. Best case you'll have about 140bhp instead of around 163bhp. Worst case you'll have a dead engine.

Ask for it to be left alone, and knock the money of a cambelt change off (£500), take it to a specialist

The garage is a highly reputable garage, working on Merc AMG's, They've got there workshop 550bhp tommy mac evo. They've got some expensive cars for sale they've worked on.

But probably havent got a clue how to work on the F4R, or have the right tools.

However, we all know you're going to ignore the advice you get from us, and let them mess with it, then come back moaning about how slow your car feels.

I give up with this place at times

You may not be paying for the work, but it's your car and if it's not done properly you'll be the one regretting it! The cambelt change procedure for these cars is different to most and they do need someone who's worked with them before and knows them to do the work. If he thinks the engine needs to come out then he's obviously not experienced with the engine so the chances of him buggering it up are HIGH.

I HAVENT bought the car yet, just deposit on it, I am going to test drive it again before buying it. I spoke to a spokesman at Renault and they said its a engine out job? I'm just confused why it can't be as easy as my spax. :p

  Black 172
Possibly you've been speaking to a salesman who's not clued up on the details?
But IF you've been speaking to the actual mechanic, run a mile.

  Maybe a 172 Cup..
Either ask for deposit back, ask for 400 off so you can get belts done, or get a life ban when you come back on talking about timing been out, or as already said your car been dead...

I spoke to there sales man, seems like a right nice bloke, uhm he said the mechanics are taking the engine out.

Seriously now, if its the ONLY thing you listen to on this forum, it's regarding cambelts.

Ring the garage, tell them to leave the engine in. You want it done elsewhere. They either knock money off for you to have this done, or you dont buy the car.

Its as simple as peas

No matter how much they say "yeah, its fine, we can do it", just tell them NO

Ahah, I appreciate your feedback! don't doubt me about that, i'm letting them do it. I'm going to take it for a massive test, if I don't like it I wont buy it and will get my deposit back.

Oh, ask tyem if they're buying locking tools, have them already( not, if taking engine out) or lending from somewhere else...

  RS6 C7
The point in a deposit is to secure the car, If you've left a deposit and decide you don't want the car then surely you will loose your deposit, I cannot believe you would let them do a cam-belt change after saying its an engine out job, These cars are very temperamental and should only have the cam-belt done by Renault dealers or specialists. If you choose not to listen to the advice people have given you then thats your problem but what was the point in asking in the 1st place?

They could be number 1 mechanic for Fernando Alonso for all I care, but if they've not got the correct locking tools then you are fcuked.

Enjoy the car.

Assuming it has a warranty then let them get on with it. If they all have fat fingers then engine out is a good option. Get them to check the clutch at the same time. Wont take long to drop the box off when the engine is out.

This won't end well - seriously. A lot of the Renault dealerships are clueless with these - let alone other garages.

It's simply not worth it. Even if they were unwilling to knock off some money (which I can't see why) for you to take it somewhere else - I'd still take it somewhere else.

If you had a Clio V6, then there is an argument to drop the engine out for a cambelt change. On a 182 however, there is simply no need. That simple 'over-zealous' comment to take the engine out speaks volumes to me. Don't do it. Years of people having heartache on here with pistons meeting valves - has made us all well aware of other garages doing the work!

Taking it to a specialist is the only way forward, imo.

The only other thing that I will add is they service Lambo's, Bentleys etc all the time they specialise in performance cars. They're a multimillion pound company and have specialist technicians. The car comes with a full warrenty for 3 months so surely something will kick up before the first 3 months? I know i'm going to get slated to hell for this next comment, but its a Renault Sport 182 ffs. Not a sodding Veyron.. I do appriecate reading peopls opinons these are no barry boys working on the car..

Doesn't mean s**t, The clio cambelts need to be changed by people with the correct tools or the timing will be out, They may service lambos and stuff but this doesn't mean they can do a clio, Car warranties mean f**k all from most dealers, If you check the T&C there will be something to get them out of any trouble you have with your car. Up to you at the end of the day.

I agree. I get mine done in a back street garage. Never had a problem.....

It's not about how competant they are on car X, Y or Z. It's about experience on the Renault F4R engine. Taking the above example, just because Fernando Alonso's chief mechanic has done F1 engines for the past however many years does not automatically mean he:

a) Knows that the 3 locking tools exist for a puny little clio.
b) Knows the quickest way to do it (engine in/out) as this only comes with doing it a few times.
c) Cares about doing it properly when he needs to do a cambelt on Mr Smith's 200k 599 GTB for when he collects it later this afternoon.
d) Other things I have probably forgotten about or don't know, as I've never done an F4R cambelt.

As has previously been said the other thing is r.e. locking tools. You can't do the job properly without the correct locking tools, unlike other engines where you can bodge it by putting tip-ex marks everywhere. The locking tool for a Vauxhall Astra 1.8 is £11.99 and this also fits about 20 other vehicles. That's an alright investment for a garage. The locking tools for a Renault F4R cost £120 and IN THE ENTIRE WORLD fit 3 cars: the 172, 182 and the Formula Renault 2.0L single seater racing car. That is not a good investment for a garage thus virtually none of them bother. Paying £500 (whether you're paying or the garage is) for someone to not use the right tools actually sounds quite amusing.

99.999% (made up figure alert) of warranties do not cover "wear and tear." E.g. brake pads wearing out, tyres wearing out - fair enough you may think. Does it cover the bearings in the pulleys wearing out? Does it cover the cambelt failing due to normal 5 year/72k mile wear?

If they are busy selling cars worth 100k, are they going to be that bothered about doing a proper cambelt job on your puny little clio? Sure this works the other way around, if they're selling Italian supercars then they'll be pretty desperate to get a 4k Clio of their hands.

Even if you ignore ALLLLLLL of the above this just sounds odd to me. You can:

Pay £500 for a monkey to do it
Pay £500 for a Ferrari/Lambo/Whatever specialist to do it
Pay £500 for a Renaultsport Clio specialist to do it

Who cares about their reputation the most? (It's not the Ferrari/Lambo/Whatever dealer when we're taking about a Clio & it's not the random-garage/man-in-street)
Who is most likely to do it correctly (Durrr the Clio specialist who only does Clios day in, day out)
Who is garunteed to have the correct tools in the first place (Duurrr Clio specialist)

Good luck. I personally am not saying don't let them do it. I'd just ask them how many F4Rs they've done and which locking tools they have. If they even know what an F4R is (why would a Ferrari mechanic know a Clio engine code unless they know a bit about them?) and say "the RS Clios absolutely require 3 specialist tools, all of which we have" well then that's a bit more confidence.

The warranty is proper warranty. It covers everything, If anything breaks its down to them to sort it out. My friend has had his Clio 182 and gets his serviced at his local garage never had problems and the Megane F1 had a cam belt changed at its local garage.

I hope Fred is along in a minute. I believe he has a motorsport degree and services supercars all the time.

He I believe he said that the F4R engine is harder to time up correctly then the engine in a Ferrari 360.
