Cambelt fun

  clio 192
Hi all,

My 172 started making a whirring rubbing noise from the engine a while ago, so i took it to my regular mechanic who is honest, competent and experienced. He thinks its the water pump but after looking into it there is also an issue with the cam belt. I'm not a mechanic so was a little blinded by the science, something regarding the cog being out of line with a groove on the shaft?? Anyway he's not worked on a 172/182 etc before and is having issues with with the lack of space in the engine bay - he's taking it to a mate who is a renault mechanic to get advice and see if it's an engine out job, after reading other forums i didn't think it was - has anyone got advice or the Renault procedure for changing cambelt that you can email me Daywalker58@hotmail.com I really dont want to have to take it to Renault and this would put my mind at ease. I'm aware it's a big job either way

Cheers

the lower crank pulley isn't supposed to line up with the groove

let him know that there's a whole host of special tools required to do the job, none of the pullies have a physical locking device, they're all held by friction

He's taken it to his mate who's an independent renault mechanic, gonna change the belt the water pump, power stearing stuff and the air con i think. £700 not too bad better than renault anyway. Apprently whatever issue there is with the water pump its fraying the belt, black dust all over the place. Anyway getting it fixed so i can return to driving-can't wait.

sounds like the mechanic has seen the keyways in the crank and pulley, they aren't used. Worries me that he's seen them though as the bottom pulley has to be removed for this, if the timing wasn't out before I'll pretty much guarantee it is now :(

well i still dont have the effing thing back, cambelt and pump is all fixed but the renault mech is now saying that one of the cylinders has lost pressure and will need to take the engine apart in order to find out what the issue is - moneys on it being a valve problem - anyone got any advice on what this can be? will it be just one of the valves or all of it?? cost??? to say the garage is dragging it's heels is an understatement had it for 2 weeks now

No sorry, can't quote for other people and depends what they find. I'd say bring it to us but you dont want to travel and we're in Cambridgeshire

Sounds a bit dodgy that it went in for a cam belt, that hadn't actually broken and now looks as though it has a bent valve. Could your first mechanic have tried to start it after getting the the pulley alignments wrong? This could then lead to a bent valve. If you had a bent valve before you took it in, there would at the least be a significant misfire.

I'd quiz him on this matter if I was you. Head off will be more expensive than the cam belt.

cheers guys, it looks like i should have done some looking into this before hand - live and learn i guess. I chased the Ren mech this morning and he said he had sent the head away to get 4 of the valves replaced (not sure where he sent them Ren-Tech? :D ) and recieved it this morning so would be putting it back together tommorrow. I won't hold my breath though.

Rentech link says it's forbidden? I'll bring it down to you guys when i got the money for a service, cheers all

So what happened?

I think it sounds like they didn't time it up right and also didn't crank it over by hand to begin with and bent your valves for you by starting engine off starter motor. They dont bend themselves, unles you have cambelt failure or they are incompetent and didnt do it right in the first place...

are you gna get lumbered with the bill for the compression problem??
and why is he sending the head away to get 4 valves changed?
if hes a renault mechanic can he not do them himself??
sounds very odd to me, and expensive
it was them that bent the 4 valves, it must have been.
the car wouldnt have started with 4 bent valves,
and you DROVE it to the garage,

also, i thought you said ONE of the cylinders isnt gettin compression??
the odd that youd bend all 4 cylinders on one piston is VERY unlikley

sounds to me (and everyone else)
that theyve timed ur egine up wrong,
and simply run the started motor,

i think you should find some more competant mechanics mate sorry
