cambelt issue 10 days after replacement

  Clio 172 Cup
I recently had my cambelt changed and within 10 days I have an issue. I took it to my nearest garage thinking I had a misfire. Turns out the belt had slipped one tooth and I was lucky I still had a working engine. Until I get my money back from the first cam change I have paid for a cam change twice in two weeks. Not good as you can imagine
Non of this is a problem, the puzzling thins is how and why. Has anyone else had this? I don't want a third replacement in a weeks time. Was it bad luck or have I missed something.

Feedback and ideas welcomed!

Cheers

Could be a multitude of things - the cambelt tensioner is probably fitted wrong / I'd also put money on it that the timing will be out. I'd get it looked at by someone who knows whats what and go from there. I'd also try and avoid driving it.

It was a professional. The garage even said it was all done correct. New belt and new tensioners. All 3 parties here are baffled by it all, as the car was perfect for over a week.
I'm just trying to see if anyone else had this problem or if I am just that unlucky!

Professional and Specialist are two very different things.

  Maybe a 172 Cup..
Speak to garage mate and ask them about the locking tools used on belt. If they don't know what you're talking about, you have a problem...:dapprove:

This is why I'm travelling 90mins to Northwest Performance for my belts next week. I have a very good local professional garage that I usually use for everything. For this though, I'm going to a specialist..

This needs to be done by a specialist and you need to make sure you have the full cambelt kit and the full auxiliary belt kit done using the renault locking tools. Your only in Didcot so you could easily travel to JMS in Uxbridge to get this done properly.

The guy who did it does it for a living. he sorted my gf's mum out with her 1.8 megane with no hitches.
I should have the car back later on today so i can get a report and post the result. i have no problem about the cambelt change, just as to why its happened.
once the belt has been tightened it shouldnt move and they garage fixing it atm say the work was carried out correctly. im trying to see if what may have caused it since dodgey workmanship has been ruled out.

The bolts on the cam pulleys need to be mega tight. I'm wondering if the dephaser pulley bolt wasn't torqued enough and has slipped!

He does Reanult sport's for a living? Didn't think so.

Take the time to read what people are saying, most people on here only take their car to a Renault Sport specialist to have the belts done as they are notoriously done wrong.

There are specialist locking tools, only for the 2.0 clio that should be used, so its not just a job any "professional" garage could do.

Robbos has echoed what I said above mate. I'm not questioning the garage. Mine is going to NW for belts. Everything else, oil changes, brakes general maintainence will go to garage I use. Simply because NW is 90mins from me..

I fail to understand how dodgy workmanship has been ruled out? Either the belt has failed, tensioner has failed or the workmanship has.

If as other people have mentioned it was done without the correct tools and is being done so again neither garage would know whats right or wrong.

Unless its at a SPECIALIST being done now your throwing good money after bad, maybe it wont go wrong a second time but take it to JMS etc from on here and they know what they are doing, have good reputations, the right tools and would stand up and be counted in the extremely unlikely event anything happened.

Saving a couple of hundred quid on a belt change is still a lot to pay someone you know, to potentially destroy your engine.

these are the folk doing mine.

have a read through at what they do on cossies, subarus etc. i got a phone call to say that my date for getting my belts done had to be changed because the owner booked me in thinking it was a 'normal' every day job. guy called kevin then phoned me back a few days later to say the guy who has done these in the past (for cliosport members etc) is off on holiday and his dad (the owner) didnt know the clio sport belt changes are a bit of a nightmare, hence why i got the phone call back.

As above, SPECIALIST is very different to professional. The F4R engine has a set of locking tools specific to it, which you will only find in Specialist garages and some Renault Dealers, thats right, even some Dealers dont have them, or if they do are just oo lazy to use them!!

182, at least they had integrity.

I bet there are many garages that would have thought 'hes on holiday but how hard can it be'.

Certain things on certain cars can be a nightmare, i guess Clio sport cambelts are just one of those things.

i wasnt bothered at all to be honest. like i said to them, i would rather it was done right than done as soon as possible and the guy is away on holiday for two weeks. plus they were being totally honest about it rather than just jumping to the chance because its a fairly high price job + a full days work envolved so it just goes to show sometimes money isnt always the way forward.

As been said before aint worth savin a few quid on the price of getting your belts done !!

Always get them to change both and always change tensioners too & get it done somewhere who is a specialist not someone who may have done one once or twice before but is cheaper.

Well I have the car back. All is well for now. Still not any closer as to the reason why, but the belt had slipped a tooth and everything was fully tightened.

I have a working car for now, my problems are hopefully solved

Not totally specific, same ones for the F4P, K4M and K4J. Only difference being the crank pin is slightly different for the K4 series.

Either way they are 100% necessary, doesn't necessarily need to be a specialist in my eyes anyone competant mechanic with the tools should be able to do it properly. My old ones still running around happy as larry and I did my own belt and it was just as good after as it was before. Did it on the meg too and thats still all gravy touch wood.

good enough, and totally correct aren't quite the same though. Many will be done wrong, and run around like that for years with no-one ever knowing

Very true completely agree with that, and its also different when its not yours. When you've got your own interest at heart it'll be done 100% (or mine are/were) when its a just a job its not quite as clearcut. imo anyway.

Whats different then? The cam locking bar is the same? The procedure is the same afaik? The only difference is in the length of the crank locking pin?

crank pin is completely different, nothing to do with length, it's threaded and engages against a flat face rather than in a hole. Also the sprocket tool is completely different

  BMW M135i
Hairy muff, thats what I meant by being different. Didn't know about the flat face rather than the slot though but having never seen the crank from one that'd explain that. Renault manuals i've read/seen/used don't say to slack the cam pulleys off like the F4R though? Only to use the 799-01 tool to turn them if necessary? Which surely you shouldn't if its locked correctly?
