Cambelt Recommendation

  clio1.4 dynamique+ 01 Ph2
Thinking of changing the Cam belt the five years is up this summer but the car has only done 37000, don't know weather to leave it a bit longer!
got a quote for £485, seems bit high? what you think

can any one recommend garages in the east Yorkshire area! Near Hull?

I would change it going by the manufacturers reccomendations as even though the milage is low belts perish/weaken with time.

Not sure about the price but TBH it worth doing if you don't want the espense and hassle of a rebuild/engine change it it does break.

I paid £236 for cam belt and aux belt change, new spark plugs, air and fuel filter replacement.

Yes that was inclusive of fitting :) A local garage and mechanic who I've used for a couple of years now. Great guy, very trustworthy and knows his stuff when it comes to cars.

So he provided the belts, filters, plugs and labour for £236!?

I thought the belts and filter alone would be the sum of that.

Seems very expensive to change a cambelt on these cars, It's a pity there isn't a Haynes Manual for the 172 sport. I have changed cambelts on fords before at just the price of a belt. I think Haynes does a manual for the Clio but I am not sure if the cambelt set up is the same. Probably will be.
Another excuse for Renault to relieve people of their hard earned cash.

For 236 unless he was charging nothing for labour that won't include the full cam kit I'd have thought, that's £120 form Renault alone iirc.

ClarkieV6 did mine at his garage for about £300 with the full kit. Got the 36k service and belt change all done and had no change from £500 :( Still it was a pretty good deal :)

its a bit of a bugger to do[/qu ote]

Have you done one then Fredy, Probably remove crankshaft pulleyand cam belt cover and no doubt endless other parts. Make sure that the nothing moves while you change it to keep timing as is...

It was the cam kit with pulleys he provided and fitted. His labour charges are incredibly low. I'm not complaining :)

He had my car for 2 days but he didn't work on it exclusively during that time :D

I'd imagine for anyone coming in off the street that he doesn't know the cost may be closer to £300 but possibly cheaper. He's well worth contacting for anyone in the Central Scotland area.

I have been speaking to Paul Renault service/parts manager in Derby and he told me that when they first started changing cam belts on the Renault 172 it took 6 hours, now they have it down to 3 hours apparantely there is no comparison to make between changing a Ford cam belt and a Ren 172 cam belt. He said that you could change a Ford one with the engine running (jokingly) they are so easy compared to the complex set up on the 172 He said it's not a job for the DIY mechanic too much at stake if it the job goes t!ts up. So you pays your money and takes your choice. :)
I have to agree with his ford statement they are a very easy to do.

Have to agree with you Jim....I wouldn't risk changing the belt myself and if you get it done at a garage you do have some comeback if things go tits up.
