Ohh!!! dear bent valve stems knackered pistons maybe(hope not though)
At least with the R5 there were no worries re silly cam belts ( Chain driven) much better. I reckon Renault designers were on the ball with a view to make loads of money when they decided to fit cam belts to their cars...

  A number of clios
my cambelt snapped the other week bent all 16v's cost me £330 just for parts at trade price and i rebuilt the engine my self you will be looking at a new engine mate if its damaged the pistons

Not misinformation!!!!

Toothed rubber belts are quiet and they're compact. But they are notorious for failing. Most other car companies who first tried them 30-40 years ago either switched back to chains or they fixed the problems with the belts. It is a disgrace that Renault is still using belts that only last 60,000 kilometres. It can't be anything but greed that they know customers will have to keep coming back to have them fixed. If they sold into the US market they'd be forced to sell a better engineered product. Cars there have to reach 100,000 with no maintenance except replacement of consumables like oil and brake pads.

chains snap too trust me mate i've seen enough bmw's with it, they also require more maintenance than a rubber belt and rubber belts don't need lubrication. they don't only last 60k.the sefvice interval for mk2 cars is 72k,i changed mine at 60k and it looked nearly new.
is their any writing etc mate on under the bonnet to say that the belt had been done or any invoices?all in all £400 pretty good price assuming they done tensioners water pump too.

your lucky though as i bought a car with a plan to fix last week with a snapped belt and their were 6 snapped valves,1 clean snap right down the middle, big chunks taken out the cylinder head and two pistons with holes right through them

Just re-read that post, it says r5, i thought it said RS, i thought he was implying that the 172 182 etc were chain driven.

Anyhow, i prefer belt driven, easier and cheaper to change and much quieter..
