Cambelt Talk...

  Peugeot 308
In the next couple of months I'll be looking at getting my cambelt, aux belt and all the ness changed.

Prices of around £500 upwards seems to be the norm which to me...isnt a bad price (I guess)

A friend of mine is a Vauxhall mechanic. He thinks im being 'daft' at travelling over 100miles to what I call a specialist and paying that much to get the job done.

Basically, he's saying that he could borrow the tools off Renault and do the cambelt change etc alot cheaper "its not exactly anything special..." being thrown into the mix.

I know its no Bugatti Veyron etc etc, but is the actually change of the belts and dephaser and timing hard to do???

I do see stories of it being done wrong time and again so Im curious?

Both belt kits retail towards £250 IIRC - so your paying for around 4/5 hours labour-

From what I've read on here, it's not so much changing the belt that's the problem, but timing the engine up properly afterwards.
Don't get me wrong, it's not something I could do, but any half decent mechanic SHOULD be able to do it if they know how to time it up correctly and have the necessary tools.

If your paying out that sort of money, you may aswell pay a bit more to make sure it's done properly!

serious response....

100% get the dephaser pulley changed at the same time. I paid out for both belts to be replaced and the dephaser went 2 weeks later, so I sold the car.
