Cambelt

  E90 320d M Sport
Hi there,

I've got myself a black 2002 Clio 172 on 37,000 miles. It hasn't had a belt change yet.

Is it easy to check the belt to see if it needs doing?

I'm in the West Mids so if it does need doing, do any recommended garages do discount for CS members?

Cheers.

You can't just check if the belt needs doing. If it hasn't been done, get it done asap. As cat said, it's way overdue!!!

What's a good price for having it done?

I paid £3600 for it and most with the belts done are going for around £3900.

It is a minter so I don't mind paying but don't really want to pay over £350 in all honesty.

^ Cam and Aux belt changes range from £450 - £800-ish depending upon where you go and if you need a water pump or not!

Do a search, there are literally HUNDREDS of posts about this...

Birchdown's website says £436 for both belts.

Just sent them an email asking if they offer discount for CS paid members.

Does it say in the service book when the cambelt needs doing?

I haven't actually collected the car yet and have only put a deposit down. The guy seemed adamant it was 72,000 when it needed doing.

There is a place in the service book for the belts.

However, when I got mine done the garage never stamped my book, even though it was a speciailist place.

They need doing - as soon as you pick up the car. If they break when your driving - bye bye engine!

Yep, in the service book it states 72k or 5 years, whichever occurs first.

Age is as much of a factor as mileage, as the cambelt weakens over time.

I just got myself an 2003 Monaco Blue 172, 50,000 miles, hadn't had the cam belt changed. The guy i bought it from was banging on about how it wasn't due until 72,000. I was like, "Well yeah, you'd be right in saying that if the car was less than 5 years old, but it's not is it? I'm standing next to the car and I can see the '03' on the plate so i know it's over 5 years old!"

So yeah, don't take any notice from that guy. It's overdue by a couple of years so get it done asap. It's a minor miracle that it hasn't gone already! I'm getting mine done this weekend! I've had the car a couple of weeks and I've been driving it like one of those nervous grannies you see doing 40 mph on the motorway because i'm terrified that the second i put the engine under too much strain, the thing's just gonna go! :p

Yeah I agree. I have another car so i'd leave it in the garage until cambelt change day and hope it didnt snap on the way there.

I'll make sure it doesn't go over 3,000 revs driving it home lol

yeah go careful, i was the same. Mine had done 70k and 7 years old. no belt done. I was very lucky as when it was done it was close to snapping!

it makes no difference how many revs your doing.

if it's going to snap, than its going to happen.

iirc the speed your doing at the time is also irrelevant as well.
i've had a cambelt snap when i was stationary in traffic before and it bent most of the valves. infact, it didn't even really make much of noise. the engine just kind of spluttered out and then wouldn't start.

get it changed asap.

Hiya mate, if u r willing 2 travel 2 norfolk i would doyour cambelt 4 250 all in. Iwork4 renault so i know wot i m doin. let me know

I thought if you gave the engine a hard time it was more likely to snap?

I'm awaiting a response from Birchdown. I could do with it being done ASAP and in the Midlands as I don't want it snapping miles away from home.

Well whether putting extra strain on the engine affects it or not i'm still driving like an old lady until saturday afternoon! Then once the cam belt is fitted, i can FINALLY pin it and see what happens! Hehe!

I have given Four Ashes and Birchdown a bell this morning.

Birchdown are pretty much fully booked until the end of the month and Four Ashes cannot fit me in until the end of next week.

I have tried giving TCR a ring but no answer.

Who else is there in the Midlands?

Just given GDI a ring, they are pretty busy too.

Don't think I could survive a week with it sitting in the garage :(

LOL I wouldn't have even wanted to drive it home from picking it up, let alone drive it around for a week or so waiting for the belt to be done.

It may last another year, it may last another minute. Just a gamble. But quite a big and costly one.

It's booked in at Four Ashes on Wednesday.

I gave it some beans on the way home, couldnt resist it lol. It's tucked up in the garage at the moment so it will not be used until Wednesday.

The last owner purchased it from a Renault main dealer. Surely they would do the belt? Maybe worth giving Renault a call.

Well it depends when they purchased it from them. If it was before it was 5 years old then they probably wouldn't have. Worth giving the dealer a ring to see if they could tell you, as if they did, you may not have to bother getting it done.

It was purchased on the 11th of November 2008.

Tom there is a specific thread about my new purchase.

Please do not try and de-rail this one :D

Rang up the dealer who sold it to my previous owner.

The belt has been done :D

It had a new engine in November just before the previous owner purchased it. Reason - cambelt went.
