Fwd's only drift in reverse...lol

If you just want a cheap car to drift in there's loads out there. You could pick up a S13 for 1k and theyre top fun! Or a S14 from 2k i spect if you kept a look out. And they already have a lsd etc

Still not drifting though is it, just sliding wildly..

Road signs under the back wheels on the other hand:nono:

agree.

S14 sounds like a good idea i do like the way they look.

am i right in saying the clio 197 can drift better than the V6 but its FWD ?!

FWD cars do not drift, and as Ben points out, to drift you need a lot of opposite lock, and according to top gear, the V6 has the turning circle of a battleship.

It also has massive PilotSports on the back, not really drift friendly.

well fwd can drift (kind of of course not rwd style) but weve all seen the 197 going side ways being controlled properly

I've seen the vid. Thats not drifting though. To drift you need power to the rear wheels.

197 pmsl its a poor party trick! Yasuyuki Kazama and his D1 buddies should kick Jean Ragnotti's ass for calling that drifing :nono:

Whats the big deal anyways its probably the worst way of getting around a corner ever created, looks pretty at shows but has no practical application in track land imo

if you watch the episode of top gear when hamster rolls that little van you'll see what he's doing, scandinavian flick with a little handbrake once the back end comes out. I'd rather go around a corner on 2 or 3 wheels in a clio than lazing around with my fat jap ass sticking out

The V can be made to drift, but it doesn't do it well.

I was at Brands with Jeremy Townsend who was trying his hardest to drive the final bend for the camera. Bearing in mind he's actually done a course in how to drift a car, it wasn't easy even for him. He got it sideways and under control a few times but it soon snaps back into line. It totally destroyed it's tyres too.

I'd guess the Clio is too short wheelbased to drift easily, plus it's got too much rear grip.

  Turbos.
lol

That is NOT drifting.

That's just pulling the handbrake mid corner with stupidly thin rear tyres.

Isn't drifting just putting your foot down with stupidly bald tyres?

It still demands skill...

And there are FWD drift competitions, perhaps just not over here.

technically, a drift is a 4 wheel slide, so what people know as drifting in general nowadays, isnt drifting, its oversteer and power oversteer.

To drift, all 4 wheels need to be at a different slip angle to the direction of travel.

RWD cars can 'drift' and technically achieve a 'drift' in the real sense, easier than a RWD car.

pretty cool video there. very good driver too to hold it so well for so long, but its hardly arse out action!!!!!!!! lol

Thats my point.

The last clip was a driver from the EDC circut so has no problems drifting anything.......apart from a clio v6.....he was sat on the lock stops there.

Theres drifting, and then theres dragging the tail round corners.

Clio's do the latter.

And as for it being a slow way to corner, have you ever seen a pro-level drifter at 80-100mph? Ive never seen someone corner so fast, it looks immense.

No one said it was slow, its just not the fastest way to corner a race car on a race track.... ;)

  Clio v6 & Atom 300
Mid engined cars in general, are not good for drifting. :nono: FACT.

For drifting you want front engine rear wheel drive to keep weight away from the "mobile" part of the car.

Mid engine rear wheel drive is for grip for acceleration, and to keep the front ligther to reduce boring understeer. Its the ultimate layout for speed.

The make the Vee even worse for drifting it has short wheelbase, with little lock, and a slow rack.

Forget drifting a Vee.;)

Peter:)

You'd of thought.

But at the complex in silverstone they enter the corner at about 120mph and yank on the hand brake, the faster japs were doing about 140 and pulling on the wand at the 150m mark.

I did a bit of cam car driving as you need to be an icredibly fast driver because a drifters corner entry and mid corner speed is far higher than a traditional racers approach. The speed that he would come up behind me was scary and i needed a fair lead on corner entry so he wouldnt smack into the back of me.

No not the V6, I mean all the drifty/slidey stuff if it's so quick through the turns?

Why aren't race cars all set up like these drift monsters?

You didn't mention exit speed above...which is all important as I understand...is that why?

Yea, exit speed is dead as they just spin away all power, entry speeds are truely amazing though.

You should have a ride in a top car/driver setup........its truely awe inspiring what they do and just how much grip they have. They still run huge semi slicks and corner G is HIGH.

Its not the fastest, but it'll surprise you.

Makes sense.

Would love to have a ride...know anyone with a seat going ;)

Next time a practice day is on i'll see if i can get a ride.

I'm an old skool racer and when i first saw drifting i thought it was a total waste of time.

However i now sponsor 2 cars and cant get enough of it myself lol.
