As above, im looking to adjoin 2 wireless routers together, one having the internet connection, the other action as a transmitter to other computers not quite in range, is this possible?

You need a bridge i think. How you going to be joining them?

This is possible, and should show as something like repeater in the web interface setup. I've used a couple of Linksys routers, and they have this capability

What it will do is scan for devices in the area which are capable of providing this function, then you will be able to select it to extend the range.

Hmmm, well its a Safecom Router, which, even though is a s**t brand name, is actually a surprisingly good router! Although i can't find anything to do with a "repeater" or anything which stumps me.

DrRollo: connecting them wirelessly

WAN < 1st Wireless Router << 2nd Wireless Router < computers

< being wired
<< being wireless

To join the 2 networks you just need a simple wireless bridge.

Linksys do some good ones.

I have a Linksys wireless 54G bridge for sale soon if u want it, brand spanking new. Well it will be when Linksys replace it for me lol.

(I snapped the antenna by mistake)

Think this is illegal and can carry hefty fines.. but in my opinion if im out somewhere with a laptop and wanna check my emails or somthing i will use any wireless network available..

Yes it is illegal. Search around on the net.

There are unsecure networks out there but a lot of them have MAC address filtering.

Still no harm in looking ;)

I'm new to this wirelless millarky, got it today lol!!

how do i secure my network? and how do i search for other peoples so i can do it on the move?

What is the range on a wireless connection, ie how far away from my wireless router can i use my wifi enabled laptop?

if this is against forum rules, please can a mod delete this for me?

can u f**king read? i AM getting broadband and paying for it myself, im waiting for my line to be surveyed by BT in the next couple of weeks then im going on 8mb. r****d..

If people don't secure their wireless networks its their own fault, there's a million and one tutorials on the net showing u how to apply a Key. you wouldn't leave your car unlocked in a car park would u?

So If I left my car unlocked you would come along and help yourself? that makes you a c**t.

Other important factors to consider is if the wireless network has been left open purposly!! you connect and they packet sniff everything your doing - bank details, email details etc - its a growing trend so becareful.

ok i agree with the part about the car, i would be a c**t if i stole stuff. but still im only using a bit of bandwidth when they probably wont be, and as i said, im only doing it while im just waiting for mine to be switched over to BB. :D

Hey Has,

Gonna bring this thread back from the dead again.

If I disable WEP key encryption, but just have MAC address filtering enabled on the router downstairs, is my wireless still 'secure' and only the machines I list in the router config are able to steal my internet bandwidth and access my wifi shares?

Purely thinking of implementing this as my PC always connects with limited access, and I have to repair and always re-enter the effing WEP key.

Thanks,

Pete.
