can you still sell a car privately even though you've sent off for retention?

  57 Ibiza Formula Sport
i need to sell my car on monday of next week if the guy coming to view it is buying privately tomorrow. however, because i need to send off for a retention certificate tomorrow after he has seen the log book and mot certs etc, does this mean i then can't give the "New owner" part of the log book to the private buyer til my retention certificate has come through? (could take 4 wks)
i just need to know what to say to the guy tomorrow if he wishes to buy my car. obviously he will have to drive it around on the private plate for a few wks til the retention process has gone through, but i need some help with regards to whether i can actually give him part of the log book tomorrow to say he's the new owner?

the private plate on my ford ka is in my name, but the ka is owned by my dad if that is any help?

cheers :)

Anni,

We did this on my 172, Under no Cincumstances give the new 'pendin' owner the log book. Infact i'd get a photocopy tomo as piece of mind.

Tell him/her you've sent it away to retain your number plate. Will be through in 3wks...ish

Yes you can apparently, the people that i might be buying off of are doing the same as you....

they said if i wanted it they would have to put there reg on retention so i could have the car with its own normal reg.

yes but ali what im saying is, surely when he pays the cash on monday i will have to give him that little "New owners" bit of the log book for him to send off?
how can i do that if the log book has to be sent to DVLA tomorrow afternoon as part of the retention pack?

this 182 is gonna be the death of me with the amount of hassle caused!

my dad is worrying that if he comes to pick the car up monday and has paid etc, if he goes through a speed camera etc within the next month or however long the retention takes to come through, we will get billed?

You have to wait until you have registartion doc through with the orignal reg on it, You will still apeear on it. then you fill in all the part to change owner and keeper.

The dvla will not issue a new registration doc if u are no longer the owner so no dont give him it.

Dude, listen...lol

Don't give him the log book, give him a copy for piece of mind...Forget the whole signin over chat.

Sent it away with your numberplate retention form and a cheque for whatever it is 100?!

Once you get it bak, you sent him/her the log book. They will then send it away to put in their name.

You MUST get a receit of sale. Sayin Mr 'x' bought the car on such and such a date/time. Singed by both party's! This covers you if they get pulled/ or done for speedin! It's a disclaimer if you will.

Follow me? - They will be drivin with your plate for the first few wks...

When colin bought my 172, he had A3 LYR on it for a few wks. Then the original plate...Now his.

Mind and give him the old plates...
