Can't open folders on my external hard drive...

  Mk2 Golf GTI
For some reason my folders are showing up as small 32kb files and will not open. The data must still be on the drive as it still shows as having 50gb left, the same as it did before the problem. If i double click on the file it comes up with the 'open with' box and gives me a list of programs to choose from.

The top folder is as normal, but the bottom folder is some sort of file that wont open. It contains all of my music and video so desperate to get it back!

I'm on vista.

Any ideas?

Cheers

How else can i change the permissions? The folder properties only have general and details tabs, no security tab.

The folders were created on the same computer, nothing else has changed. Tried doing a system restore and also used the 'check disk' option in properties but to no avail. The check disk did say there were errors and that certain files would be moved to a folder named 'found' but there is no new folder and the problem still persists!

Any ideas on reliable data recovery tools?

Cheers
