Get a lift down, book it in for an MOT near your house drive it to the MOT station, fail an MOT, drive it home.
Perfectly legal.

I thought you could only do that to the nearest MOT station. ie you couldn't drive it from Northampton to Sheffield!

Shiply is the easiest thing. God knows how some of them do it so cheap. Some charge 50p per mile! I wouldn't even get out of bed for that.

You thought wrong then mate :)

If they limited you to the nearest MOT station you could be breaking the law just becase a new one opened that you didnt now about, and it would be massively anticompetitive on price.

They cant say "any within 40 miles" cause some people dont live that close to any.

So the rule is ANY, you can live in john-o-groats and book an MOT in lands end no problem.

I have this in writing from when I confirmed it with the DVLA as it was a question sent into a magazine that I was doing the questions and answers page for a few years ago.

There is no clear & fast ruling as far as im aware lol.

There is, and the ruling is ANY location of MOT station is acceptable, and there are no restrictions to the type of road you can use to get there either, motorways etc are all acceptable.

You are NOT allowed to make detours on the way, and thats where it gets a little less clear, as it would be hard for them to say if your wrote was valid or not, so if you lived in birmingham booked an MOT in conventry and went via bristol to pick stuff up on the way for example it would fall foul of that rule.

So I could pick the car up Sunday and have it booked in for an mot Monday or does it have to be the exact same day? As I can only get down Sunday?

Yeah it runs be abit dubious driving it all that way though without it breaking down as not looked over it ect and it having been a project car you never know

At at track day earlier in the year I got talking to a guy called Carl Greaves who runs his own one man band car transport business. I took a card in case I needed him. I think he charges about £1 a mile. I have never used him so cannot vouch for his reliability but he struck me as an OK guy who I would take a chance on. He is based in Chesterfield, mobile no. Is 07980970375.

His business card BTW features a picture of a Clio 200.

So if you are running out of alternatives he might be worth a try.

As I said, no detours, so you cant pick it up on a sunday and then go via your house and end up there on a monday, will need to be going STRAIGHT to the garage for an MOT if you do it that way.

If you do drive it all that way, I would put a wideband up it to make sure its running ok if I were you.

I can't do that though as only day can get down is Sunday :/ surely someone on the forum does this lol

£130 is not bad, I would charge that.

Towester is just up the road from me. Just phoned my mate to see if he would do you an MOT on Sunday, say's he's away, sorry.

Where's he gone. lol I answered you but you'd gone off line.

No I don't I'm afraid. I would do it for you but the race car is on axle stands on the trailer, so I can't get it off.

Do you have a vehicle you can tow with? You can hire car trailers relatively cheaply. I did this to pick up a car from Southampton once.

Couldn't you collect Sunday, drive straight to the m.o.t station and leave it their til Monday? That's also assuming they have off road parking?

would that be legal chip?

I cant answer that I am afraid as it wasnt a question that I asked of the DVLA in the first place, so I would be guessing.

Try Anyvan :) They shipped one from Leeds to Nottingham for me with no probs. You basically just enter the job and drivers will bid for you so you can choose the best/cheapest one
