Car feels slack.

Hi all,

Drove the car today to a mates house and it feels slack.
The power feels like it dies out higher in the rev range (my mates bmw did this and after he changed fuel filter it works superb!) , believe that can't be changed on a clio though? :/
Also is there any other maintainence I can do to it? Like, clean out injectors, throttle body, anything like that which could be restricting it at all?

Thanks in advance for help.

Hi Ollie

I would check the plugs first to see if there is any unusual colouration.

Fuel filter can be changed however I believe it's only every 120k or so and honestly I doubt it would do anything.

You could give the TB a wipe with carb cleaner.

Report back once you've done those bits :)

Hello mate,
Thanks for the reply!
The spark plugs were changed (aswell as a full service done) a couple months ago and used the correct NGK plugs and the renault elf oil. I can check these anyway as soon as I'm free if need be though!

The throttle body I gave a wipe over the other day with carb cleaner when I was tidying up the engine bay. Wasn't much muck on there as I only had it all off and cleaned out when I done the service.

Could it dying higher in the rev range be anything to do with the fuel pump maybe? That's the main annoying thing tbh. It doesn't hold the power to the redline, it fades away the higher I get which isn't right, surely?

At least you have a good start with maintenance done recently. I didn't mean the spark plugs being faulty but more the colouration of the tips.

I personally would check other things before the fuel pump. There would be other signs of a fuel pump failing at high revs such as white tips on the plugs (running lean)

Power isn't linear and does tail off towards the top end of the rev range as you can see below the peak isn't at the red line but before. (image stolen from Sharkys thread)

Try unplugging the map sensor on the inlet and taking it for a drive. It will run on preset values in the ECU then. See if that's the problem.

Otherwise I'd try and get it plugged in to see what's what.

I assume it's running at the correct temperature and the redline is rising once it's warm.
