My MK1 overheats while idle for five mins i dont know if its the fan or not ?

you must have a blockage in the cooling system for it to overheat that quickly on idle

How Would I Clean It?

generally, you would need to flush it clean and replace the coolant. if youve not done it before get a garage to do it. it wont be expensive.

Does the fan come on at all?

^wot he said the fan should be running if the car is too hot, if its not the sender may be faulty
