Car not starting AGAIN!



My non starting problem seems to have returned, fuel pump is priming but the engine won't crank. Left it for a while went back to it and it fired up straight away. Killed the engine and went to restart it and the engine stopped cranking again. What the hell is going on? Really winding me up this.

It's booked to go in to Renault again on Wednesday but I'd really like to find out what the problem is.

Not cranking as in, not even turning over or it'll turn over but wont start?

get a wheel wrench keep it in the car.

Whenever it dosnt start tap the starter motor through the exhaust manifold ( between branch 2+3 ) should be a black cylinder shape on the block.

Sometimes it helps to have some one hold the ignition on
 
I forgot to add this to my OP. The problems started just after I washed my car, is it possible a abit of damp had gotten on to something electrical in the engine bay and caused a short somewhere?

have you cleaned the relays in the engine bay too as the terminals go green

As above, check the LED in the middle on the SERV and STOP light goes out after a few seconds. If it does and it still wont crank, make sure the battery terminals are tight and the gearbox to chassis earth strap is tight and has a clean earth.

Will do mate cheers, surprised the starter motors get stuck on modern cars though.

Ok mate cheers! Where about is the gearbox to chassis earth strap located?

also my relays were all clean but when you opened it up the copper connection had broken and was hanging , hence the reason it would start sometimes but not others, the rac man swopped the right hand relay over to the left one just to be sure and it started up straight away.

You could be swapping the relay for another duff one aswell

Suppose that's a possibility.

Something else I forgot to mention in my OP was that I'd sprayed WD40 on my clutch cable as it'd started creaking. Any chance some of that could have dripped on something electric causing the problem I had yesterday?

WD40 dispells water and protects electrical contacts so I doubt it dude!

Other thing to check is the solenoid on the starter, if its split and barely touching, if you hit a bump in the road and then come to start it, it wont.

Think it's something to do with the starter motor getting stuck, car decided it didn't want to start this afternoon. Managed to give it a whack with my hand and it fired up straight away again.

I had the Same problem 5 months ago…
Starter getting stuck and when I try to start the car by pushing it , the starter motor released and working normally …till the next time …
I’ve Changed starter motor (used one) and it was good till now ….
Same bloody problem, what can I tell you … I wish it was made in Japan …

Mine had the same problem, would only start with a quick tap on the starter motor. So i took it to the garage and it was fixed in no time, only cost 98 quid inc a new starter motor and labour :D. SOunds like brand new now, really pleased. But still a bit annoyed as im getting a new car hopefully next week, damn thing couldnt have lasted another week.
 
jap starters are just as bad. trouble with the renaults IMO is the proximity to the exhaust manifold.

Removal of the starter, and a good clean and re-lube of the solenoid often loses the issue for a good long while

I'd thought about doing that but from what I've read on here you'd need to remove the driveshaft from underneath to gain enough room to remove it. I really don't want to be disconnecting driveshafts to be honest.

change the starter motor, and if your clever you dont need to remove the driveshaft as it will come out via the top of the engine rather than the bottom.

Lol. When it comes to mechanics and changing parts on car I'm certainly not clever, I can only do very basic things.

Past couple of weeks the starter has been fine, car fires up 1st time so it seems to have temporarily sorted it's self but it'll need replacing at some point.

Yeah :( was it on 3 wheels :eek: was jus showin off lmfao, nah the brakes faded at the wrong time, shitty oem pads :mad:

ive just been reading through this.

just got home from work and went to start the car for the first time today, was off to put petrol in it.

anyways, it wont start and the relay box is making a ticking noise. its got a brand new starter on it so its not that surely. any ideas?
