car sounds like an old scooby HELP!?

  MKV GTI
Hi,

My car is backfiring like mad and sounds like a scoob it also has very little power. Im thinking its running on three cylinders so could be plugs, leads or coilpack or maybe even the timing has slipped any ideas?

many thanks.

Could be any of those, worth changing your plugs anyway.

Start with the plugs, then leads if that fails.

will have shot a spark plug out. Take inlet manifold and you will see (normally the 3rd plug left to right)

Engine oil is fine, with a bit of luck £20 for some spark plugs and all will be good!

As for the diagnostic i would have thought it would show up as i noticed my engine emmissions light was goin loopy!

It would say plugs/coil or coil leads.

I had a similar problem a few weeks ago and it turned out to be the plugs after replacing coil pack.

But you'd be very lucky if you get plugs for £20.

The cheapest place for NGK PFR6E-10 plugs is Ebay.

If you cat was blocked or knackered the emissions light would come on and it wouldn't cause it to sound like a scooby.
If it was blocked there would be no power and the cat would probably be glowing red due to all the hot gasses being held back and building up heat as there not allowed out the exhaust.

Yeah NGK's are the plugs you need.

There are other makes of plugs available such as BOSCH's etc but they dont get on well with the F4R 1*2 engines going by what i've read on here.

If you need plugs urgently try NW Performance, they are slightly more expensive than Ebay (£36.99) but they can get them to you by next day delivery for less than £45.

You could also go to K Tec but there a rip off at nearly £60 for the same plugs.

God knows why they don't click on a reduce there prices

As for coil packs.

Euro Car Parts i found to be the cheapest at £49.65 for a Genuine Renault Valeo one.

Cheers for the help guys d1cky inpaticular, will get some plugs tomorrow hopefully will sort the problem!

You could order plugs from Renault but i've heard there 15-20 quid ish each.

So NW Performance may be the best bet as you'll receive them on friday if you call them tomorrow rather than order them online as you don't know when the online order is processed.

Sounds like lambda or any of the ignition components, however before aimlessly slinging parts at the car get it on diagnostics to see if there are any clear fault codes.

The NGK's are Iridium tipped aren't they ?

no, Platinum.

NGK PFR6E are standard plugs without the renault badge and for a lot less cash

If you want to diagnose which cylinder is missing, it's quite easy, just pull off the injector plugs one at a time with the engine running, and if it makes no difference, you've narrowed down your fault. Injectors are succeptable to dying, but it sounds like fuel is getting through as the unburnt fuel is igniting in the exhaust. Most likely a faulty plug, or ignition lead.

Just been thinking my car got professianally detailed on Saturday and the engine got a good clean thinkin maybe water has got into one of the spark plugs and blown it would this make sense as t has been running a little off ever since?! Ordered plugs anyway think this sill is the most likley culprit.

What everyone else has said is correct.
I had the exact same thing on my old Clio. It will be rediculously slow.

I had my coils changed and it was sorted.

As for the manifold gasket. As far as I'm aware. No.
