carbon fibre roofskin

  C63 AMG, F430 & 172
i really want a carbon fibre roofskin, i know sybez has one on his 106 .

do they just lay it over the steel or do they make a new skin then fix it on?

if they make a new skin how the hell is it fixed to the steel body?

it is usally made off the car working off a template as it ideally needs to be heated in a kiln. then they can bond it onto the steel with glue essentially. the other method is to make a full panel (like they do with a bonnet) which has reinforcing bars etc. and then the old roof is cut out.

Its extra weight if its just glueed on as such plus its always domed to falure after time.
A proper one is expensive to do right.

rip the roof skin off and make a template using a new roof pannel

needs to be autoclaved using prepreg laminate really to be stong enough

was with Sybez on the weekend.

His is just a carbon sheet bonded onto the original roof.

So it saves no weight, just looks pimp, and matches his carbon boot and bonnet.

If you found a company to produce one then let me know, as i would be up for some of that!

tape up the edges of the sheet (wrap the tape over the edge)

also tape up the sheet before you cut it

na, you want to use somestuff you can see, gaffer tape or wide masking tape, it helps to keep the weave straight, and helps to stop any snags on the freyed edges

You spent 800 notes on CF?? Its madness but i love it!!! (price was based upon you saying CF comes in at 40£ per square metre iirc) Plenty of pics of the work i hope!!!! :D It won't be long before your thread has gathered a small cult who will congregate outside your workshop!
