it is usally made off the car working off a template as it ideally needs to be heated in a kiln. then they can bond it onto the steel with glue essentially. the other method is to make a full panel (like they do with a bonnet) which has reinforcing bars etc. and then the old roof is cut out.
na, you want to use somestuff you can see, gaffer tape or wide masking tape, it helps to keep the weave straight, and helps to stop any snags on the freyed edges
