Carbone lorraines.....

  172 5HED
Are they really as bad for dust as people make out? Want a new set of fronts for track play and these are meant to stop pretty well so Im told!!!

Either that or DS2500s????

Opinions?

LOL PF97s are a lot worse than Carbon Lorraines for dust!!

The side of my car from 4 months of PF97 use LOL!

Have you considered DS3000's?

I didn't find them as bad for dust as some people make out, but I did make sure to wash my wheels immediately after the trackday - which turned out to be a good time to do it, as the dust just came off with a simple wash. I certainly didn't get this half way down the car problem that I've heard reports of - none of it got on to bodywork.

They also don't squeal as badly as some reports - but they do squeal.

They do create a lot of dust, and they are aggressive and noisy, not to mention slightly grabby when cold. However, they are also serious, serious brake pads. If you can get these to fade before you boil your fluid then I'll be amazed.

Having said that, they are (so far) the only race pads I've tried, so I can't compare them to anything else.

OK - That's a fair representation of what they sound like.

I'm sure some people could live with that (not me incidentally I only put them on for track).

The noise isn't a problem unless you're the kind of person who gives a f**k what strangers think about your brakes, or you're the kind of person who thinks strangers give a f**k about your brakes.

lol! howz about getting brakes that perform as well, but don't squeal giving the impression you've mow'd over some old biddy!

Aye? Magic! ;)

That's fair enough if the noise concerns you. I couldn't really say about other pads performing as well without the noise, as I have not tried any of the other race pads yet. I do, however, know that the Carbone Lorraines are monsters, and that the dust and noise doesn't personally bother me. Sure, it will bother some people, most probably the type who drive around doing their eye lashes in the rear view mirror -x-

had carbon lorainne pads with brembo max discs on my vts, brake dust all over the wheels every single day... pissed me off as i spent hours cleaning the car, then the wheels got dirty in 5mins

thankfully theyv gone down, infact they only lasted me 6k miles on my vts i put them on at 32k now its on 38k and run down, i am going for mintex pads next

i dont recommend them

L'Oreal, Coz the jews worth it!

Squeak all the time.

Ruin your wheels.

Eat discs for breakfast.

I had read about them eating discs. In my case, they didn't. I destroyed a set of Carbone Lorraines in one track day. 75% worn, and bent/warped backing plates on the piston side. However, the discs are fine (Brembo Max if it matters).

They are compromised for the road. Mainly in the sense that you simply don't need them on the road. I will use them again on track but, yeah, massive overkill for the road. I think I'll use the 'rodos next outing and compare.

EDIT: Christopher, I know what you mean but, 'Horrible' isn't a word I'd used to describe brake pads that will plough your splitter into the track, for 30 solid minutes around Rockingham at maximum attack and not ever show any signs of fading, even when they're so hot that the backing plates have gone soft and the piston has bent the f*****s :D

Where I went wrong, the lad I bought the car off was planning on tracking the Cup hence the need for the Lorraines.

Had them on the car for about 2 months before I got that pissed off with them squeaking in traffic all the time and people looking at me thinking my car was a shed and I couldn't afford brakes.

LOL

Yeah, they're hero pads on track. Just too compromised for road use.

I guess that's why they're not a road pad.

TBf the 2500's are better balanced IMO. At Oulton there was a lad running the CL's, braking performance was no better than mine, just a lot noisier/dirtier.

Both race pads, just one's less compromised day to day.

Yeah I'm going to try those next for sure. TBH you could argue that the CLs are too good on the Clio, even on the track. They just refuse to fade, meaning the first problem you get is boiling fluid and the pedal giving up and telling you to go f**k yourself. I think I'd rather use a pad that will eventually at least fade to avoid melting them and/or vapourising my fluid :D

As I understand it, with a super aggressive pad you're just going to hit ABS activation earlier? (Fully expect to be wrong!)

So in that case, I see your point.
OT but have you tried any coilovers yet?

Yeah, of course you reach a limit of grip, but that limit is pretty high when you're braking deep into a corner where the track is coated in rubber. I found it also gives me more control being able to generate more retardation with less pedal effort. I'm a bit of a n00b to all this, so I'm far from an expert. I'm just relaying my experiences so far.

No, no suspension mods yet. I'm still in two minds as to what to do with the car, if I even keep it at all.

Interesting read this thread as breaks are on the agenda after I've worn out the standard pads (not long to go). TBH I can't be bothered with cleaning the wheels all the while.

  182 Cup
I've used standard pads, Mintex 1177's, PF97's and DS2500's. For an all round track/road car I'd say that the DS2500's were the best compromise.

No major effort needed to clean them and great performance. If I was prepared to put more effort into cleaning my wheels and didn't mind paying out for more frequent disk changes I'd have the PF97's on there without a doubt.

Ive just ordered a set of carbone lorraines from kam racing, for my 172 track car,I will testing them out at Donnington track evening on the 9th of june,it will be good to compare them against my current tarox pads, not that Ive had a problem with those, but I keep getting good reports on the CL's:cool: so I thought its time to give them a try;)

Buy a set just for track use? That's what I've done, and have got some s**tstuff's for daily use. The CL's are unbelievably good, my chest was killing from the harnesses digging in, thats how good they are!

  182 Cup
The PF97's I used ate disks (iirc 5-6000 miles before they expired), but from what Roy has posted here the CL's seem to be better.
