To add to whats been said above..
Doing 4-5 miles a day, means that the engine will never get up to temperature, this in turn causes the oil to condensate, and break down a lot easier. The engine that never warms up will also still be on the cold start enrichment map, making it more susceptible to things like bore wash, which won't be helped by an oil that is breaking down.
Giving a car a good thrashing gives it a good chance to clear the blocked up ports that'll be coked up, the cat would get up to the temperature it's designed to operate at, the exhaust that will be filled with water will be able to evaporate.
Are you running it on super? Or just regular unleaded?
A few years ago I picked up a Williams 3, had a 64 year old owner for the last 10 years. When I first got it, it would not do anymore than 110mph. Just wouldn't pull atall. 3 weeks of hard driving and it would then ping off the limiter in 5th.
