Cat Back or Back box

OK I want a Magnex (brummmmmmm) and Im damn well gonna get one. Full price for a back box is £175 - ok Ill get a Cliosport / GR discount from Demon Tweeks, but a cat-back system is £150 more. Is there any point in getting the cat-back system? I dont really believe the power gain stuff, unless anyone can convince me otherwise... What to do?

Id always get the whole system - Ive never understood why anyone would want just a backbox unless you just want noise. There isnt a huge amount of power gain to be had from an exhaust system but there will be something perhaps a couple of brake, and as you tune the engine further, the exhaust system is sorted and ready to release more power. The standard system will strangle it whatever further mods you do, whatever the back box. Get rid of the cat as well.

Thanks Nick, that pretty well confirms my thoughts. Dont know whether theres a cat by-pass pipe available for the 172 - anyone seen anything?

On the same subject, most of the exhausts Ive seen are stated to fit the Clio 2.0 16v 2000 model onwards. Does this mean that the Mk1 and Mk2 can be regarded as the same when it comes to exhausts, or should I be looking for something specifically designed for the Mk2?
