Celica T-Sport 190

  Cup In bits
So I bought this on Saturday, I was fed up of putting fuel into my Shogun Sport V6 and my criteria was cheaper on fuel, tax and insurance. It will just be used as a stop gap for the summer between rebuilding my A4 Avant Audi engine and the selling of my jeep.

After searching through all the local rags, gumtree, FB and Auto trader, I went and looked at a good few cars ranging from a 1.4 Seat Leon to 320ci E46 BMW's to Audi a3's, all of which were being sold as 'excellent' or 'mint' condition in some cases, most were riddled with faults and most importantly for myself who doesn't mind doing a few mechanical jobs the body work had seen its best, that was until I seen this thing sat at the side of a local dealers forecourt. I managed to speak to the dealer at 7pm on Friday and asked if he could throw a bucket over it and I would come for a look on Saturday, the car itself had sat around for circa 6 months waiting to be retailed after said dealer had been broken into and various cars/equipment being stolen. I turned up on the Saturday, some air was put in the tyres and the car jump started, I took it on a short run to clear the brakes and give it a little test drive... returning quite happy with what I had seen and heard I offered some money and I was on my way home.

So the car is on 75,000 miles, it's the more sought after 190bhp model and is also a t-sport so the upgraded splitter, spoiler, skirts, leather interior, double din head unit/cd changer and projector headlights from what I know, it also has a detachable tow bar haha which I'm told the previous owner had used for a mounted bike rack, quite handy for myself tbh to shunt my trailer.

Some pics as it was bought.

5 alloy wheels which is a bonus.

The car has some doubtful 'mods' and colour choices but nothing I won't put right myself quite easily.

Fly eye tints on all rear lights.

So things that flagged up on the test drive were the brakes needed cleaning up from sitting around, nearly new discs and pads all around though, there's a wheel bearing or two needing done but it's hard to tell as these things have a lot of cabin noise, wheels and splitter need some attention, the splitter is a weird one as it's literally just the splitter that's stone chipped to death. Missing wheel nut from where there was a missing locking key socket and the lockers were removed, new window wipers and an exhaust donut needs looking at, there's a small blow form the front section. Also I'll be doing the cam lift bolts which are only a few pound by themselves but you have to remove the rocker cover and get access to the VVTI unit, this is just a precauitionary measure from where they can shear and are quite a bit of work to resolve at that stage.

The wheels and splitter will be getting some rattle can attention when I get a chance and I'll throw a set of half decent tyres on.

So today I started to look at some of the jobs that didn't take long. I bought some new wiper blades which were well needed and I removed all stickers and fly eye wrap. Already looking better IMO.ill strip the brakes down over the coming days and just out some more miles on it to see if there is anything else that needs looking at, seems a good one though.

I've looked at buying one of these several times over the years as they're so cheap now... Looks like you're heading in the right direction with yours.

TBH they have never been on my radar having had a friend when I was younger that went through 2 engines in the 140 bhp in quick succession from oil starvation, from what I have read though the 190's are different case other than potential of chewing through oil with piston ovality and badly designed oil scrapper rings. It seems fine though and I'll do a comp test before I do the lift bolts or spend any great deal of money on it.

The most comfy cars ever! Great choice.

At its limits with me being 6'3", I would like the steering wheel to come towards me some more and angle up 10 degs or so which isn't possible but I do love the sat in rather than on feeling they have.

I like these. My mums mate let me loose in one when 17. Had the shock of my life when it hit 6k.

How much did you pay if you don't mind me asking? A good mate had one years back when I had my type r and it was just as quick and dare I say sound better standard.

Helped a mate put the 190 lump into an MR2 and that is fun!

£1450 mate. Yeah they do sound good up on cam, I can't help but think they would beat the Clio's but I have read on here that the Clios handle them no problem??

Nice choice, and good effort so far for de-chavving it!

Thanks, yeah it won't take much really.

From the looking I done, a £1500 car gets you a high milage car with part service history, the good IMO ones are going for 3k. This only has 75,000 with part service history, it's only done circa 10,000 miles in the last 4 years so everything needs a deep clean Italian tune up haha.

Does anybody know about the setup of the handling on these, I'm not wanting to spend much money on anything but if I could fit a RARB from another model or car cheap enough or do a few small tweaks to the geometry then I would.

  Cup In bits
Potentially cheap motoring in a sporty model if you get the right car.

Thank feck for pattern parts, Toyota were needing circa £90 for this lot minus arb link (which I found knocking about the boot) whereas I got them for a total of £14.92, total spend including the wipers is at £37.96. I hope to spend less than £250 all in.

So I take back what I said about pattern parts, typical motor factors.... They can't organise a pish up in a brewery.

I got the exhaust off and sure enough the donuts had seen their best. All was well until I went to fit the manifold to centre section donut. It's was nothing like the part I had taken off and that was all they stocked :rage:. So back on with the exhaust with copious amounts of exhaust paste, I'm now driving a tractor sounding car but I will buy genuine donuts and get that done soon.

A couple of the heat shields he rotted around fixings so I made up some curved washers to secure them before the exhaust went back on.

While doing the brakes I noticed its fitted with Eibach springs so that's a bonus and also the tow bar is original Toyota, why they make a tow bar for that I don't know haha.

That leaves the front brakes to strip and clean and the exhaust to be redone later in the week.

Any suggestions for some half decent tyres for under the £200 mark? 205/45/17?
It has Parada's on the front at the moment and as you would expect it's under steer/wheel spin central. I just want a good all rounder, it's not going to see track... Or not yet, I might crumble this summer and book it up.

Tow bar needs to be rid of. Car looks nice, do like these.

I'll take off the bumper, clean up the tow bar mount and paint it all black so it can't be seen. If I take it off it will leave a cut out in the bumper which will annoy me more than having the bar itself haha, that and it's handy for shunting around my car trailer.

I've always had a soft spot for these. I actually like them with the oversized spoiler too. [emoji41]

Nice car for the money! [emoji106]

Aww no you can't, the GT spoiler is straight out of Fast & Furious haha, wash your mouth out.

For as close to your budget I think you will struggle to beat these.

After that look at Vredestein or Uniroyal rainsport 3s.

Chipped off any rust and wire wheeled of the remaining paint.

Painted the fronts gold this time as I think it suits better, unsure wether to do the backs to match or run the gold/black look.

The anti vibration pads had parted from the pads so I cleaned and re applied some adhesive to secure them back on.

All built back up.

And after a spin around the block to clear the excess paint from the discs.

I found that it has a Pipercross filter fitted too so that's a bonus now all the service bits are complete, the dealer had done the engine oil/filter, pollen filter... I'll clean the air filter and maybe do the box oil to keep things right. The brake fluid was flushed through while doing the calipers.

I had all the wheels balanced today and it's honestly transformed the car and it's steering feel, also the road noise. One of the wheels had a sizeable buckle which I'm told is really common on these Fondmetal wheels and also on loads of Toyotas and many jap cars which are not my scene usually so I learnt something today.

Next up is the exhaust gaskets again, I bit the bullet today and ordered from Toyota to the sum of £58, add that to the £20 for wheel balancing and the previous costs, the current total is at £103.96 taking into account the returned gaskets that were wrong. I have ordered a rear wiper, aerial to rid it of the awful bee sting job and also I'll get some alloy lockers bought too.

That will just leave the painting of wheels which I'm happy to do now, the front splitter, tyres and cam lift bolts.

You seem to be doing a me. That is buying a cheap "Stop gap" or "Runaround" car, then getting obsessed with tidying it up haha. Always had a soft spot for these! Keeping an eye on this one.

Story of my life, I buy anything and end up with all the bells and whistles attached haha, I guess that's the Mechanic in me, I'm programmed to find faults. I can't drive cars that are sheds of s**t, I just can't and it's annoying. I'll always get the use of the spend though or budget for the resale and walk away all square or up.

My Clios are the only cars I haven't managed to do that with, too much has been spent in those.

Definitely an alternative to the Clio as far as purchase price but for me you just can't beat the price of a Clio for performance v running costs. Everything is extortionate from Toyota and any main component pattern part ain't too cheap either. But one is a Couoe and the other a hatch.

Love this Morgan!

These keep with 1*2's no problem. I'd say a touch quicker if anything.

I thought they would just from how they feel Danny but I had read the opposite on hear, standard my car syndrome.

They ain't no Clio in the twisties though.

Toyota dropped a bollock with these.

RWD.

That's all they needed to do with it and they'd have sold shedloads more.

VVTLI all working correctly?

My exhaust gaskets arrived today from Toyota and hopefully the Big Red front caliper rebuild kit arrives in time that I ordered today, the front brakes weren't releasing how I would like after the strip down/paint so I'll do both while I'm at it. There's a rear set of nipples coming too as they're not looking too clever.

I also have a RARB link on order to make a pair with the one that came with the car, it would be rude not to for £18. The VVTL-i lift bolts should arrive within the next week along with the rocker cover gasket to do that job and also a rear aero wiper to complete the set. That lot so far stands me circa £180 so I should come in under my £250 budget by the time I paint the wheels and splitter. No doubt I'll find something else to tidy up/renew though.

I'm rid of the awful Halfords special aerial and I'm getting all my needed channels now

Yeah that would have gave it more of a following but then that goes against what the MR-2 was??

Yeah it all seems fine to the best of my knowledge, it's got a strong kick at 6200 rpm but for the sake of £5 of bolts and a £13 gasket it's stupid not to replace the lift bolts or at least check they have the superseded taper design bolt.

MR2 was only a 2 seater, with feck all luggage space to help hinder it.

And only 140bhp v's 190. The Supra disappeared so that's where the Celica should have taken over. IMOOC

Decent underrated cars these for the money. Almost 1*2 pace and well built.

My mate has the Corolla T-Sport and it goes and sounds well when it hits lift! They have a massively long 1st gear lol.

I'd go out on a limb and say they have more than the pace of a 172 if driven properly, you really have to get the gear changes right to keep them on the boil though.

Either way I'm not too bothered tbh, it wasn't bought to beat anything or compete in the traffic light GP, it's a stop gap untill I rebuild my Audi's engine and to save fuel as I'm fed up of visiting fuel stations in my jeep. I done 80 miles yesterday on a 10er with some 'lift' and that's with a sticky front caliper too Happy with that.

It does yeah, you feel like you're buzzing the engine by holding onto it though.

Me and my mate did a load of runs up to silly speed on an empty motorway coming out of Dieppe last summer. It was close but the lower down grunt of mine helped. You have to completely nail them...
Drove down to the alps and back in it and enjoyed it:).

Fair enough that sounds like a good comparison, noise can be deceiving, just like the Hondas V-tec, I makes you think you're going faster than you are. Fart in a bean tin comes to mind.

So attempt no. two at the exhaust tonight after receiving the gaskets.

I was pretty pissed knowing I had no gas in my welder and it being Friday night, nothing's ever easy. I chopped and prepped it anyway and went down my lock up with the hope someone else was knocking about to get a shot of their welder. Glad fully there was a welder going spare so stitched it back together.

That wasn't going to be the end of the exhaust woes either, not having the luxury of doing it on the car it was welded about 5 degs out of c**k and I lost 10mm in length chopping it so I'll have to extend the rear section by 10mm and orientate the flange for a perfect fit, that's for another day though.

It just wasn't my day, having removed the boots and painted the black RARB link to match the other I realised there is about 5mm of difference in length between the two, so that's another job to be looked at.

Loving this !

Good work mate

Cheers.

I have ordered a set of luxury pile custom car mats and boot mat in black with grey borders from Premeier Products for the price of a set of genuine mats. Hopefully they turn out well. Wiper, lift bolts and rocker gasket re-ordered today as eBay shat itself for some reason.

To give an idea of quality, hopefully the new thicker boot mat will quieten down some of the road noise these have, orherwise I'll put some insulation in key places.
