centering auxilliary belt tensioner spring

Can any one tell me the correct way to fit an auxilliary belt tensioner so the spring sits central to the pulleys on a 172 mine has moved towards the back of the engine and worn a groove in the belt. It looks like the spring has gone over centre.

it should naturally return to "center" if it doesn't it's seized
