changing cars on an existing insurance policy.

Ok, I have an existing insurance policy open on the clio, which I paid up front. It has 6 months remaining on it.
If I was to change the car now, and added it to the original policy would I just have to pay half the cost of a years insurance on the new car, minus the money I have already paid from the remaining half of the Clio policy?
Does this make sense?

if you swapped cars now you tell your insurance and they would transfer the remainder of the policy to the new car for a ammendment fee (normally about £10) then they would give you some money back if the insurance is cheaper or you pay the differance if it is dearer

... or if it's more expensive just charge you the extra for the remaining months on your policy.

I transfered over from my RS with 8 months left on my policy and had to pay an extra £160 for the upgrade

Ok,
-I paid £800 for the year on the Clio.
-The new car would be £1700 for the year.
-There is 6months left on the clio policy therefore they owe me £400.
-Half £1700 because there are only 6 months remaining =£850
-Minus the £400 already paid out for the original policy would mean I owe them £450 for the remaining 6 months of the policy...

Is this right or am I in a muddle!

I think your taking too much off tbh (an extra £400) I think you'll have to pay £850.00 - if in doubt call them up.

shouldnt be too much to be honest, what car u got in mind??

it doesnt always go on the quotes, best was is to ring up and fnd, i nearly bought an astra, would have cost me £3000 on a policy, but switching with my clio which i payed £1800 for, for 4months of the remaining policy would have cost me £60ish, so was a good price!

just ring and ask

Think of it this way, you have £400 left on a 6 month policy, six months on the new car would be £1700/2 = £850 minus the £400 is £450 so I think you're right mate

Yeah I did ring them up the other day about a 172 but its such a hassle, im not a racist by any means but I find it hard to understand what he's saying. Definatly can't insure a 172 for reasonable money, have always wanted an Alfa 147, reckon I could insure a 1.6 one now, and always sell it in the summer when i can afford a 172, if I don't like it.

Doubt very much it would work like that, they will stack the premium for the beginning of the policy, much like if you pay a personal loan off early. You'll end up getting less tham half back probably.

They can fcuk rite off! Bunch of conmen, hate insurance companies with a passion! Should have payed monthly, even though its more expensive in the long run, prob wouldn't loose much.
Well I can't afford to piss away £400 so guess im sticking with the Clio until July then.

If I cancelled the policy now surely they would have to give me half the premium I payed back because I ve only 'consumed' 6 months of the policy! Bloody joke, don't know why I bother with cars we just get raped, im off to research bus passes!

if you check your policy it will state what refund you get if you cancel ie if you cancel withing 1 week of taking it out you will get a full refund, if you cancel up to 3 months you will get 65% and so on.
also if you try to change your policy to a car that they can't insure for you due to age etc you will get a full refund for the remainder.
