Charging problem

  Clio 1.2
probably something simple but it has foxed me, have a 1994 clio 1.2 and the alternator light has come on.
Thought fault was the alternator so changed this, still the charging light is on but flickering occasionally to off.
have 11.2 v on battery and this does not increase on starting the engine.

Question is what is between the alternator and the battery that could break the circuit, and where does the warning light on the dashboard get its power from to go off.

Tested the battery before you changed the alternator?

Should be well above 11V.s Check you've tensioned the belt properly, not too slack, and check the live wire on the alternator, nice and tight, and clean.

Belt is tight, connections all tight expecting 14v at the battery (new) just wondered if there is something between alternator and the battery which mihjt have failed

one og the cells in the battery may be breaking down which could be the problem you could check this by impeadance testing the battery.

Might still be worth getting the alternator checked even if it has been replaced. I had a new one fitted and it faild a few weeks later.

If not, dodgy earth maybe ?
