'Cheap' stealth exhaust - ?

i know there are loads of these exhaust questions but i'm losing the will, sifting through them all.

just got a quick question..

is there such a thing as a 'cheap' stainless stealth system? the few i've read about appear to be custom made for some of the tuners on here and (sorry) they seem very expensive for a two box system when the bigger manufacturers offer similar for £100 less (but without a stealth option - as far as i've been able to see).

are there any alternatives? does anyone have a longlife exhaust?

thanks

just checked with the cheapest of the three stealth suppliers i've heard mentioned on here - they can supply the back box on its own but it's still the best part of £200, so it's not even as if i could build my own system cheaply using other sections from cheaper sources. bugger. don't particularly want a tailpipe on display.

has anyone had a custom stealth system built (particularly, a de-cat one)?

A after market stainless steel is cheaper than buying the stock system from Renualt plus with the aftermarket you get a life time guarantee.

Funnily enough i was looking for a stealth system at lunch time, the only one ive heard of is the K-tec system, i agree 299+vat is a fair bit for a cat back system :(

something else i've thought about is buying one of the bigger-brand systems (i've had a Piper before and it was excellent - £270 for the Clio cat-back), cutting off the tail pipe and replacing it - but without having one to offer up, i've no way of knowing if this could be done successfully and i'm not gambling £270 on it.
might have to be one of these custom made jobs - but still interested in hearing from anyone who has had one made by longlife/powerflow/etc

thanks so far

a stealth exhaust with a de-cat wont be very stealth! would be very loud!

i'd read that a de-cat is noisy but, as chris106gti, was thinking more of the tailpipe:)

besides, i've actually decided not to de-cat for the time being as i've subsequently learnt that my insurer would like an extra £70 if i fit anything that increases the power output.

realnumber1 has given me a helpful insight (cheers) and we've a Powerflow dealer here in Bristol so i think i'll make some enquiries and see if i can't go and have a look at an 'off-the-shelf' system (or are they custom made?).

still potentially interested in one of the tuner's systems - depends upon the Powerflow though

I didnt think decats were allowed? If your car was spot checked it would fail emissions and be deamed un road worthy would it not?

God this again

Decat isnt illegal, failing the emssions test is

Removing the cat will most likely put emmisions over the threshold insurance companies assume this and because its not roadworthy they wont insure you. (but some will)

What stealth systems are available then?

the boys that built the Titanic said the rivet's were fine and look what happened to them when it had a wee bump with an ice cube

if his car has a bump with an ice cube his exhaust is going to be the last of his worrys lol!

fred.. while you are about.. have you had (or heard of) any issues with 1.2 shafts on a 172 engine? trying to decide wether to leave as is or upgrade to 172 running gear as my cars going to be used on track soon (sorry to hijack)

lol maybe so, but it's not the guys who made the exhaust who are telling me this :p But I'll go with your opinions on things, as I only paid £200 it's naturally crap so don't bother, it was handbuilt by the finest polish immigrants Exeter has :p!

i wasn't aiming it at you! your's might be a masterpiece and be built like a challenger 2, i was saying (in my experience) you buy cheap, you buy twice

no offence intended

I am now on my third 172.

I have had 2 pro speed stealth exhaust's and 1 longlife exhaust.

longlife imo = shite, terrible build quality and far too loud.

pro speed = perfect for what i needed, a quiet stealth system, well made, never failed on me, and it also made a nice note when you wanted it to.

having said that i am considering a k tec stealth this time round just for a change.

If it was that well built it'll be the only thing left of the car the rate these things fall apart :)

Know what you mean though, have seen some shocking cheapy aftermarket exhausts.

build quality does vary a lot and some i've had in the past (Magnex..) have been much poorer than others (Piper). i think it's down to the individual manufacturer and isn't necessarily directly related to the money you pay.

at the moment, i'm hoping for a second-hand KTEC.

i wasnt intending to buy cheap for a new cat back, 250ish would have been nice

really like the look of the ktec stealth, gets good reviews as well but is it not around the 350 mark, for a cat back? seems a bit on the pricey side regardless of quality

My prospeed fell apart (literally, twice) but my mates is spot on.

Think they can be a bit hit and miss!

think you're dead right there
.
chris106gti, spotted that you were asking earlier which systems are available. the three off-the-shelf ones i've read mentioned on here are from GDI, KTEC and Yozzasport. they're all round-about the £350 mark; don't know about the others, but the KTEC apparently comes with all of the fittings (except the rear hanger, which is £20+).

apart from £350, you need to consider delivery (i think GDI quote £25), clamps, hangers and fitting. it's easily a £400-£450 job by the time you've done.

i'd want to fit my own and would want to be using Mikalor clamps, which also aren't cheap

all inc with th YS, no clamp required as is uses proper flanges, no blowing ever!
