Checking engine mounts

ok, so something else wrong with my car now!

i need to check my engine mounts. The drivers side one looks brand new, still has the renault part sticker on it, so will probably just need adjusting. Is it just the 4 bolts that i undo to adjust it, or the big bolt in the middle too?

What about the other 3 mounts, how do i check them for damage/wear and tear? dogbone mount, and both gearbox mounts? am i looking for cracks etc.. i dunno! lol

and if i was to replace any of the mounts, is it something i can do at home with axel stands without the engine dropping out? lol

to check the dogbone mount open the bonnet and hold the engine and try and rock it back and forward, it should have a little bit of movement but it should feel pretty solid, mine used to swing back and forward quite the thing when my gearbox mount was gone.

also you can stick a jack under the engine to hold the weight and remove the mount have a look at the rubber bushes for cracks and tears.

you on about the dogbone mount martin?

with the mount on the left, do i need to undo the big nut in the middle to adjust it, or just the ones on the outside of it?

okie doke... had a quick look this morning and the drivers side and battery mounts seem fine.

its bloody hard to check the round rubber under undernieth this mount, as its weighed down by the engine, so how do you check it? the rest of it looks ok yeah?

Fubar by the look of that they could move forward a little, loosen the bolts with the yellow marks and get someone to pull the engine with black part of the mount forward while you tighten them.

i tried that... all that happened is that the black frame moved forward and the engine went back to it original location, so it wasnt in the middle of the mount any more.

see the little pegs appearing through the hole in between the bolts?

well the stayed still and the frame on top of them moved... right or wrong? :S

Yeah thats right, hmmm the back rubber mount, in the pic it looks like only half of it is there. Is the rubber solid between the engine and the black mount? (see the pic)

the rubber is the same thickness as the front rubber. should that gap where the arrow is be closed up, as i can try and move the mount further forward again?

let me just check, by forward you mean towards the front of the car? lol

right that gap has now been closed up, i put more effort onto pulling the engine forward and the rubber is now against the black plate at the back.

can i just check, whats the purpose of that black "guard"? is it just there as a kind of bump stop for the engine mount, i cant see that it actually supports the engine at all!

i was told about the one under the battery , gearbox mount , it does tend to be loose and can cause knocking effect :S

Does that mean you undid the four bolts and moved the black plate forward (towards front of car) in the direction shown with by my dodgy red arrow?

Because my ph1 was making the exact same noise your car did in your 0-60 video. This cured it. In your picture, that mount deffo needs pulling forward, it's sitting all the way back.

But it sounds like (from your quote) you've fixed it already. :approve:

yep, thats what i did.

ive got a pic of how it looks now... i'll get it up here as soon as i find my blootooth dongle :)

LOL @ rock it back and forth! 2.0l weights a bit more than the 1.2 dude!

this is how it looks now.

as you can see from this pic, this is as far forward as the mount can possibly go (unless i remove that little metal tab)!

That still doesnt look right to me, Im sure there shouldnt be a gap, its as if your black holder has streched.
