Checking timing

  F20 BMW 120d msport
Sorry for the noob question, but is checking the timing of a 182 engine a simple thing to do?

The reason I ask is that I bought a car cheap with very little history and no mot, which had supposedly just had a new belt and dephaser. After a few little bits from me the car runs beautifully, however failed spectacularly on the emissions test. I'm running out of ideas and am beginning to wonder if the timing is off a tooth or something, so want to check to confirm.

Cheers in advance.

You’d need the pin and shoehorn tools to check the timing:
1. Remove the bolt on the front of the block near the gearbox casing and get somebody to rotate the crank until the pin is in place (be careful not to insert the pin into the balance holes, it should be a snug fit and go all the way in)
2. Carefully push a screwdriver through the middle of the cam caps and remove.
3. Insert the shoehorn into the cams, it should slide in with little resistance if the timing is perfect.

Don’t forget to replace the cam caps with new ones and reinsert the pin hole bolt.

  dan's cast offs.
what were emissions results? map and injector duty cycle readings at idle will let you know if it's close enough to not worry about.

This was the result when I first had it done in the summer. I've done some minor service items to it since (replaced thermostat and temp sensor as it was running open loop fuelling) and it has improved, but the CO levels are still way high.

Can anyone recommend somewhere around Hampshire that could look at it for me? The method to check described above sounds beyond me as I don't have the timing tools.

May be a silly question, but Is the CAT in place?
Often it gets replaced with a “decat” pipe, as mine was.
Fortunately l was provided with the CAT when l bought the car and was able to replace it, after which it passed the MOT emissions test with no issues.

It had a de-cat pipe when I bought it, but one of the first jobs I did was replace the whole system and fit a used OE cat. The cat I fitted looked to be in good condition (else I wouldn't have fitted it).

My cam timing was out, when Birchdown changed the cam belt they said it was not done correctly the last time.

Afterwards the car was transformed. It was so much smoother without the low gear kangarooing and lumpy idle.

That's what I'm wondering.

The engine runs well though. If it weren't for the emissions I'd have no concerns about the timing, but it's pretty much the last on my list of things to check [emoji849]

But on mine the idle was lumpy and it was horrible to drive in traffic.
Yours may have been remapped badly or have a faulty injector, or somebody mapped out the sensors in the exhaust (mine has two near the CAT) so it’s not adjusting the fuelling as it should.

That's a possibility I suppose. It had a nasty DIY de-cat pipe on it. I have a spare standard ECU kit so might swap it over and see.

Injectors are all good.

Thanks mantis.

If the timing is off/out is is it simply a case of belt off, correct timing and replace belt?

If you find the timing is out, you have to additionally lock the dephaser and exhaust pulleys on the belt side (a tool you also get with the kit) slacken the bolts holding both pulleys onto the cams, adjust at the other end where the horseshoe took is so that it slides in with just a finger, then retorque the bolts on the pulleys.
At this stage you would usually remove all timing tools, manually rotate the engine over a few times and reinsert the pin and horseshoe tool to see if anything has moved.
There’s a copy of the workshop manuals that explains the process here for reference
