Circlip of doom

Is it possible to fix the circlip issue on a 172 cup gearbox without taking the box out and stripping it?

Stick a Renfort plate on

You can sometimes get away with welding or as said stick a renfort plate in. Drilling and tapping is a bit fiddly with the box in but not that bad a job.
