We need some external aironet wireless equipment installing in the very near future.

Can anyone point me in the right direction ? We are based in the North West.

Cheers

Was is it that your doing, exactly?

We are in a row of 4 buildings and we now have both ends. The middle 2 buildings will not allow any cables through the roof space etc.. At the back of our 2 buildings they have perfect line of sight with each other so the wireless units would sit on the wall approx 15ft up on either side.

Unfortunately Darren, dataplex wanted £650 for a site survey before anything even though it is a completely straight forward job.

Thinking of getting the equipment and doing it myself to be honest. Doint really want to get my hands dirty with it as i have a million and one jobs to do as it is.

Personally, I have a massive distrust of wireless stuff. However, it's a real pain in the ricker that those two buildings in-between won't co-operate. It's hardly like you're fitting massive air-conditioning ducts between the buildings, is it?

In the same way, we're in a row of 4 buildings, but we own all four and communicate between them using 100mbps fibre. As it turned out, fibre was a major blessing in disguise as the amount of machinery, plant equipment and associated power circuits we have onsite has increased proportionally. I think as it stands, even 1gbps copper would be saturated with emissions from this equipment - even if we used STP cable.

Site surveys unfortunately are par-for-the-course in terms of wireless setups. And even after that, you can end up with bizarre connection issues (like 3Com wireless routers not liking certain Intel wireless NICs in laptops - as we've found out!). You could always try infra-red links? Not sure of the costs, but for that type of distance, IP traffic won't be a problem via infra-red. A smallish IR mast and receiver box on each building, simply pointed at each other. Like most non-wired kit though - they need serious security at both ends. There's also radio as an option - but for the distance involved, it's probably total overkill. Some of the high-spec radio IP kit has a range of 35+ miles.

What is the approximate distance between the two buildings?

yeah, cheers mate, spot on that.

hopefully be a straight forward job. do you know how wide the fibre will be outside. we have to go back to the landlords and tell them how thick the cable will be including any shielding. + will there be 2 cables running side by side.

  As father and son....
if you cant go up, go to ground level or under it. Undersurface infrastructure or an actual on ground physical pipeline might serve your needs a bit better

cant go underground, there is a carpark out side and there is probably no way they would agree to it.

i assume there is some standard fibre for outside applcations ? weather resistant etc .. ?
