Clicking noise when not accelerating

Car  2003 Clio Dynamique
Just picked up my clio today. Driving home and i hear a clicking noise, best way to describe it is the noise you hear flicking through a pack of cards.

I seem to hear it more when i come off the gas, it stops when i dip the clutch but then comes back when i come off the clutch?

I am going to run the car into the garage this morning to see if they can detect the clicking noise.

Whilst i am there i am also going to get a price for a cambelt change. No history with the car and it is at 72000 so best to change the cambelt.

Car is at the garage. I went for a drive with the mech so he could listen for the noise. He said as the noise stops when you dip the clutch and it's coming from the centre front of the car, it could well be the gearbox, not good.

Anyway he has checked the gearbox and it has very little oil in it. He is going to top it up and add an additive and see if that cures the noise, fingers crossed.

Also got a price for my cambelt kit and he quoted £250 - £300, not sure if that's a good or bad price?

Tbh mate, I'd find a Renault specialist near you on here and go to them. They'll immediately identify the noise (could be speedo cable), and you'll know your gonna get a proper cam belt change done.

Cheers jordski19, i know what you mean about the renault specialist but i do trust this garage. They topped up the gearbox and added the additive, they told me it might not be an instant cure but on the drive home i very rarely heard it. I'll just see how it goes over the next few days.

Sounds like a clutch release bearing to me if it goes away when you dip the clutch.

I'll get it checked. The car did have the NS track rod end ball joint replaced for the MOT so going to also check that. Driving it this morning i found i could still hear it when the clutch was pressed, just not as loud.

Is it a 1.2, sounds fairly expensive to me, when i had my 1.2 i had mine done for £80, that was mates rates though.

Turned out to be the diff. One garage quoted me £800 to £1000 for a gearbox and clutch.

Managed to get a low milage box and a new clutch all being fitted this weekend for £150.

Rear NS brake is grinding when i brake so i'll check that too to make sure the cylinder isn't leaking.
