Clio 172 Cup, blown motor advice

  Clio 172 Cup
Hi All,

I'm new on the forum as I've just bought a 172 Cup so this is my first post. Unfortunately the reason I'm posting is because it's now in need of a new engine. I bought it, drove it back home around 90 mins away, took it out for a spin once home, then it cut out. I tried a few things, but in the end fearing the worse I got it over to the Renault specialist in Rugby. On inspection they found one of the valves had come away and the valve seat had been chewed up through the motor, damaging 3 pistons to the extent you could see chunks out of them, scoring the bores and making a general mess. I went to see it with the head off and you could see swarf over the pistons, not good considering I'd literally had the car 2hrs before it happened so not quite the dream start. Anyway for you other Clio owners apparently this is quite rare, so don't worry, I think I can only put it down to bad luck.

This is the part where I'm after some advice. Do I......

A. Try to find a new motor. Does anyone know of one around? Mileage was 89k so I'd like to get something without too much more than that.

B. Sell as a roller. Anyone on here interested in it?

C. Strip it a sell off bits

It's got a few nice bits, like stainless stealth exhaust, refurbished turini wheels with good tyres, mono steering wheel, shocks are fairly new with eibach springs, decent interior etc...

What would people do?

I like the car and would like it kept on the road either with me or someone else, so don't really want to do C., but that choice might make the most financial sense at this point.

Advice welcome

Thanks

Andy

Hi Patrick, it was a private sale. The previous owner did actually get in touch to see how I was getting on between it blowing and it going to the garage, so knows somethings happened but not the full extent yet. He did offer sympathy, but nothing else at that point, which I was really expecting to be honest.

It's tricky because I don't think he could have known anything was up with it as it was running fine. The garage mentioned they didn't think the head had been off before either.

It was bought sold as seen and was running fine at the time so not sure legally what rights I have.

Ahh s**t luck mate. Had exactly the same happen to mine. Engines are relatively cheap to buy used and if you can fit it yourself even better.

I broke mine but it had lots of expensive mods so got a good chunk of money back.

Thanks mate. It's still at the garage and they said they'd be happy to put a new motor in if I can find one and it would probably take around 10-12 hrs to do. I'd get a new cam belt kit and clutch fitted as well, it's just finding a good motor is the problem

Bad luck mate. I’ve never heard of that issue either to be fair. What’s the mileage and when was the last oil change? It looks a good one, is it off here?

Hi, the mileage was 89k so relatively low. Oil change was done recently and it came with a full comprehensive service history, so all the right things.

I bought one that turned out to have noisey little ends and burning oil. Bought another engine from an honest seller on here with belts done for a good price. New clutch fitted as seemed stupid not too. I was able to fit myself though so saved a fair amount. Was rather annoying I had to do it though!!

I would say get another engine and fit. I would assume 10 - 12 hours labour and all the parts to go with it won't be cheap though.

That is real bad luck a couple of hours after purchase.

Saw this for sale when I was looking for a 172, looked a really clean example from the pics! Sorry to hear about this though, real bad luck. I bought the car that @Mbeau is talking about from him. IMO I'd source an engine and keep it.

Thanks for the advice. I found a decent looking motor for £450 delivered, quote for work, plus cam belt kit including dephaser and clutch was around £1250, so £1700 all in. That doesn't sound too bad, however there is some heavy corrosion around the rear sill which became more evident when the recovery truck strap was pulled off and caught it, exposing the extent. I can see that costing a couple hundred quid to sort properly, so let's say £2000 total for a car that's maybe only worth £2-2.5k with a non original engine. Really tough decision but decided to strip it for parts and put the money towards a tidy one. Absolutely devastating taking it to pieces, but interesting finding out how it's all put together at the same time. The more I take off it the less pretty it looks which is making the job easier. If you're in need of any bits let me know I might be able to help out. Thanks, Andy

@Andysmithy1 if your planning on getting another one, keep any key parts for yourself IMO. It’s always handy to have spares knocking around. Especially things like sensors etc off the broken engine.

Such a shame that it couldn’t be saved. I was looking at this when it was up, but went for a cheaper one with more miles. Hopefully you can get straight into another though. There’s a few decent looking ones on eBay at the moment. It had a few decent parts on from what I can remember.

Yep, it had nice recaro seats and private CUP plate that drew me to it, plus a few other nice mods. Good service history as well, with cambelt done 4 years ago with hardly any miles on since, however I can't see the dephaser was done which might be why the belt jumped! Hard to say really. Anyway, I'm going to draw a line under this one and start again.
