Clio 172 Cup Ph2 Driver Side Inner CV Boot Replacement

  Clio 172 Cup
Hi All,

Just been to my local garage and told me that the O/S (Driver side) inner CV boot was leaking on my Clio 172 Cup ph.2. I have looked through a couple previous forums and lots of chat regarding removal and replacement of the whole driveshaft as this boot cannot be replaced and other stating the boot can be replaced without need of a new driveshaft? Was hopeful that a boot replacement kit would do the job and not have to fork out on a new driveshaft. Anyone used the 'universal' spilt CV boot kits for this with any sort of success?

Has anyone had any experience with this as would like to get this repaired ASAP.

Cheers,
RH

I have always been under the belief that for the money it costs to get a decent sized, correct rubber boot, replacement clips, grease etc and the mess it involves VS the pre assembled driveshaft, at the cost of a few quid more, knowing the complete shaft is new, ready to be bolted in, is easier.
Providing the part is good quality - that is...

Super easy to do the boot drivers side also means you dont need to drop the gearbox oil.

Basically remove the shaft, remove the old boot, knock the CV joint off, fit new boot to drive shaft, refit CV joint clip boot in place, refit to car, send it.

Costs about £15 for a decent boot. Honestly if the CV joint is fine this is what I would do, in fact thats what I did do.

I think the full drive shaft is £50 at J&R, I dont think its worth the hassle of trying to replace the boot for that money.

172 Cup shaft is different and the ones you get from J&R are no good for a Cup

I think what you've been reading is more about the inner boot/seal on the passenger side as they are a t**t to do and have a bearing in them that has 2 or 3 different sizes and it's quite easy to get the wrong one as well.

The boot that's leaking on yours is by far the easiest one to change, just remove the shaft, cut off the old boot, slide the cup off then as long as you've bought a stretchy rubber boot instead of a plastic one, you can stretch the boot over the tripod bearings, pop some fresh cv grease into the cup then slide it all back together & fit the new clips

Ignore the snapped bit, but that end of the shaft comes apart like this and worst case scenario if you can't stretch the new boot over the tripod bearing is that you'll have to remove it by taking off the circlip and use a puller or tap it off with a punch & hammer.
If you do end up taking the tripod bearing off, just wrap it up in sticky tape to stop the needle rollers inside from falling out

That's a great write up Paddy - Thank you. Would you have a recommended CV boot kit to use for this?

You can definitely get cup ones as I fitted one on the passenger side a month ago.

The ebay part numbers were on another thread on here.

Are you sure about that though? I had a new J&R passenger side shaft for my Cup - admittedly it was the seller that told me it was Cup specific - and it was a different length to an original one I had to compare it with.

I can't remember the measurements off the top of my head but I know that in order of length Ph1 are the shortest, 172 Cup, then Ph2 - on top of that The 172 Cup shafts have a different number of splines on the shaft itself so use a different cv joint, although that's only an issue if you're replacing those yourself but something that might catch you out

I can't 100% say for the driver side as I don't have that but the passenger side is fitted on my Cup, by me and has been fine.

It even did a track day at the weekend with no issue.

If you search it on here you can find the old thread.

Not sure if it's relevant but mine is a turbo with a diff too, so it's under more stress than normal and has been fine.

Just looked back and I actually fitted it in September last year, before the duff and turbo so it's done more miles than I originally thought.

Not really, I've not had to buy 1 for god knows how many years so a bit out of the loop but if I was looking to buy 1 I'd deffo measure what's currently on the car and just search for ones that match those dimensions because there's quite a few variations of shaft and cup diameters just the same as the inner boot on the opposite side

The diff might alter things a bit as some of them need to have a shorter shaft in them to work - I've only got experience of this in Mk1's so no idea if the same applies to the Mk2's
