Have removed gearbox and hole/crack in diff casing area is evident. Need to know if a later 172 esp gearbox will fit in non esp car. I have read about speedo drives being different so how do we over come that if we use a later box? And what happens inside these boxes to make them break? How do we fix them long term? What is this circlip i read about do? has it been fixed on later boxes.

What year is your car mate? Some ph2 172’s don’t need the speedo sensor as they take the signal from the abs - again, the year of your car will tell us this.
Everything happens to make the jc5 break mate - the list is almost endless! Lol! Nothing you can do to make the box stronger except fitting a 182 bolted diff. This does away with the circlip and removes the biggest potential failure area.
I rebuild the jc5’s mate and usually have parts/boxes in stock.
