Clio 182 whine/whir

  Clio 182 ff
The last few day I have noticed a light whine coming from the front whilst driving above 20mph you can here it get louder and change pitch when slowly accelerating. It sounds almost like a supercharger (I wish) I've tried to get the sound when sat still and can't hear it, in or out of gear revving. When moving if I clutch in you can still here the noise, it doesn't matter if I Coast in neutral or in gear with the clutch in the noise doesn't change, Ive tried revving whilst coasting and this does not change the sound either . I'm wondering if wheel bearing? But I'm not exactly great with these things. I'm taking it to my mechanic soon but just want you more knowledgeable guys Input first. Thanks

Think mine does this too (I agree sounds like a supercharger [emoji23]) didn't think much of it. Sojnds like it's coming from the front left. Assumed a pump of some sort and paid it no mind. Interested to see what other people might say to this

Power steering pump will start to whine when it's on it's way out or it's low on fluid.

I just went out in the car and when I stopped and turned the engine off I heard a whirr down sound like something was slowing down?

Aircon pump that. Mine does it when i've had it on, doesn't do it if i turn AC off.
That'd explain me ... Very rarely hear this whine...very rarely have the AC on!

Really strange one

Gearbox mainshaft bearings?

If so, get it rebuilt now, before it does this.

God hope not, would it still make the noise even coasting in neutral if it was this? How much did the rebuild set you back?

All the time the gearbox internals are rotating, so yes.

I had the forethought to obtain a known good used box in advance, though the timing of when it went bang was inconvenient.

@NorthloopCup is CS`s gearbox specialist when it comes to rebuilds.

Fingers crossed it`s a wheel bearing, but I would expect that to change note when cornering.

JC5-130 is the one for the 182

I'm taking it over to my mechanic tomorrow so hopefully I'll know one way or the other, think I'm clutching at straws with the wheel bearing

Another point, I coasted downhill at 60mph in neutral and as I slowed to 30mph as did the whine. Would you think the gearbox whine would be consistent and not change tone and speed being in neutral? Or am I just being daft

The wheels are still turning the shaft on the gearbox so the noise will be in time with the speed if it is the box bearings.

Little update, haven't managed to see my mechanic as he's still on a breakdown, but the sound is louder now and I can also hear it when sat still idling. Also a funny smell from under the bonnet

Another update, I got my mechanic to nip for a drive in it, he then had a good listen at his garage, he seems to think it's one of the cam belt pulleys or the idler whiring, the cars booked in for the end of November to have cam belt kit/aux belt kit/dephaser and reseal of the cam cover so hopefully that will cure the sound. He said not to worry about it as its not too loud. Put my mind at ease a bit now. Roll on the end of the month £££

For a second opinion I had the rac nip out to me, he had never heard of the dephaser pulley. I took him for a drive and he said the whine just sounded normal. He said maybe it would quiten down after having the belts done but not to worry. He seemed more concerned by the dephaser noise lol

If this is correct : "....Ive tried revving whilst coasting and this does not change the sound either ." = from you o/p, I can't see how it can be engine related!?

If the sound/pitch does not change with engine revs, surely it's nothing relating to the belt drive?

Re: burning smell, this could be the alternator, a couple of months ago mine just decided to smell at times, although it still output some current (no light), it's a particular smell not easy to forget either. This is quite serious, as they can set on fire, but any mechanic should be able to pick up that smell.

The sound was really hard to replecate at first because of how faint it was but now it makes the whine on startup but doesn't go away just quieter and you can hear it on idle and driving . It does change with revving as it obvious to hear now. My mechanic seems to think one of the pulleys are on there way out either the aux tentionor or the cam one, It's having all the belts pulleys and dephaser done in a few weeks so it's garaged till then

Just to add it also sounds a bit like whistling when staying steady on throttle at say 30mph

Ah right oh, ...don't discount the alternator as they can whine, I know it's not what you want to hear with all that expense going on. Hope you get it sorted..

Thanks mate, yeah when I take it into diamond I will get them to check it out and may as well replace the alternator whilst the belts are all off, just a bit annoying so close to Christmas
