Clio 200 gearbox repair - how to go about repair?

So potentially looking at a Clio 200 with a dodgy 3rd gear.
I've had drive in / out repair quotes of £1100 - £1200 from the 'big names' on here.
Is there a cheaper way?
I'm only an hour from Agency transmissions but do not have the time / expertise to remove the gearbox myself and struggling for local specialists.
Is removing the box something I could get a random local garage to do?
Overall am I looking at well over £1k to pay to get this done or is there a cheaper way?

Agency did mine for £325 and it's spot on.
I won't say it was a walk in the park to remove but it wasn't the end of the world.

Just a time consuming job.

Look at a different car without a skanked gearbox?
My thoughts were , if the price is right, buy this, get gearbox done and know its good. rather than buy a car and have the box go a couple of months later.
I'm trying to figure out that the 'correct' price to pay for the car to take account of the gearbox repair.

Yep, Agency quoted £350 but cannot take the box out/in and didnt have any recommendations.
You removed/refitted it yourself?
Is this something a non-specialist would be fine with?

The gearboxes are a known weak spot. Buying a 200 that hasn't either had the work done (uprated rebuild) or a brand new box from Renault (i think Christopher is on his 3rd from them?)

Buying one without either is a f**king minefield. I wouldn't touch them without receipted proof.

£325 is a cracking price from Agency.
They're not the hardest thing to remove, it's just time-consuming.
The place I go for servicing would charge £200 for the labour, in and out. That's worth not having the aggro yourself IMO.

For £200 I'd never have removed it myself.

Any decent mechanic can do it.
I'm a groundsman and I did it on my driveway.

I'm struggling to find any guides to get an idea of difficulty?
Cheapest quote I have had is £450ish for book time (7.5 hours) from Rentec Bristol

You won't find a guide as far as I'm aware.
If you've never had a box off before then you may struggle. It's impossible to gauge as I don't know your ability or what kind of tools you've got.

I think I need to dismiss this option - much as though I'd love to learn I just do not have the time.
Whether I buy this car or not from what I am reading I should understand the cost of this - seems to be pretty common.

I was just about to post a link to it on the 'ebay' section to get opinions.
I cannot access ebay at work but I 'won' it last night for £3400 but did not hit reserve - was wondering about talking to the guy. I reckon reserve will be around £4k.
So £5k all in with new gearbox, clutch etc.......but its still a 100k miled car. not sure what I think.

Spec looks good.

I'd not go higher than £3800 on that myself and that's with me personally doing all the labour.
No mention of the cambelt either, that's an expensive job too.

for what it's worth you can't rebuild a jc5 gearbox for £325 unless you make a loss on the parts AND do the job for free.

If you've got a socket set, some stands and a couple of jacks it should be easy enough. I assume there's a lot more room in the bay of a 200 so access should not be a problem.

I got the box out and in my 182 in a day. Pig of a job but easily doable to save 200 quid.
 
its a fiddly job, but i did two within a couple of weeks (someone sold me a fucked box the first time round) all on the garage floor, you don't really need any special tools a halfords set will get the job done, if its your first time you will/should have it out in maximum a day
