Clio Belt Snapped

  1.6 Clio 99 RT Auto
Hi Guys,

I was driving along last night, then all of a sudden there was a banging (which im assuming was a belt snapping and hitting something possibly the bonnet) after about 100yards the banging stopped and the car continued to drive normally.

Once i found somewhere to stop i pulled over and had a look and the fan at the front looks like it has lost a belt an the fan wasnt spinning. The battery light came on the minute it the banging started. Ive read on a few forums that it could be the fan/alternator belt has snapped but ive also read that the clio doesnt have a fan belt?

So im a bit confused about whats going on! The car drove home fine albeit with the battery light on, There was no issues with steering or noises.

any advice?

Thanks

You've lost your aux belt by the sounds of it, lucky for you it hasnt taken out the cambelt too which it can do.

Not a huge deal, but you need to look into why, might be leaking PAS fluid onto it for example and require fixing, or the 2 belts might both be badly overdue in which case you need to do the cambelt too.

Mine Aux needs changing due to the soft inner arch liner for the drive shaft area rubbing along the outer edge of the belt, so could be something like that thats damaged the aux belt. Pure speculation but worth checking when it's changed.

Yes its vital you find out WHY it failed, as next time you might not be so lucky with it not taking out the cam belt too.

The car was last serviced and mot'd back in march last year. Although it had an MOT and Service it had spent a year sitting on a drive in the middle of a farm before i got it.

Did that service include belt changes?

70 quid supplied and fitted for both belts?

Wow, that is PROPER cheap!

Its double that just for the parts on a 172!

Not sure.

I took the car into the garage, they quoted me £70 to supply and change both the belts. So ive gone with this.

Thanks for your help.

That was with my father-in-laws discount who does a lot of spray work for the garage. So they may well have done!
